How to ContributeFranklin Palmer Mill Site

4th Jan 2003 15:53 UTCPhilip

Hi,

I am asking a question as to possibly listing a locality. As many of you know, a section of the Palmer Mill site in Franklin, New Jersey, was used for many years in the late 1800's and early 20th century as a dump for waste rock and tailings from the Parker mine, used to support a Rail Trestle from a rail spur to the mill. This locality was excavated by The Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society in the 1980's, and for a number of years one could freely collect there. Those days are no more. The site became enbroiled in political and environmental isuues, from being a possible EPA "superfund" site, to possible develpment into condo's, to know being "owned by an investement group", and officially "off-limits" for collecting. This is however, one of the world's greatest mineral collecting sites, having yielded many rare and fabulous species. Chet, if your reading this you probably saw Claude Poli's and Bill Anderson's case at the Fall show in 2001- platy Margarosanite's, esperites, 4 and 5-color pieces, Axinite's, Clinohedrites, ect... all from the Mill site. WOW! My question is, is it right to list a locality on the site that is officially "off-limit's" ?

Thanks,

Phil.

Not a locality - a "mess" Do not add as a locality under any circumstances.

I live in Franklin, and it WAS a great place for hardystonite, clinohedrite, esperite, chlorophane, fluorapatite, etc. But a small group of about 4 hard-core unemployables who had nothing better to do with their lives during the day destroyed it!

Thanks guys and you KNOW who you are!
