How to ContributeWhy, oh why can I not get my pictures to be added?

20th Jun 2003 03:57 UTCJustin Zzyzx

Everything goes great except after I get my description written up and go to submit I get told that the locality can not be found. What gives here? I have tried doing only a few key words, just the state, just the county, the mine name, and Copying the whole locality straight off MinDat! What's the dealy yo? Why are you not feeling my love?

I feel for you, Justin!

I often seem to have similar problems myself, especially after having typed in a particularly long description. Although it's rather hit and miss, I've found what seems to work best is just typing one word of the 2nd locality descriptor eg Alston gets typed in for Blagill Mine, Alston Moor, Cumbria, England, UK. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't - I usually copy any long descriptions onto my clipboard, if I remember, just in case it kicks me out again.

Not much help, I know, but at least you know you're not alone.

Cheers,

Lloyd

Justin,

it may be that you are typing in one too many or too few spaces - computers are sometimes very fussy about spaces, which they treat just as any other character when doing comparisons of text strings when searching for entries. This should not affect 'cut and paste', unless you are not capturing a final space (or spaces). Try highlighting from left to right and see if the highlight area extends beyond the last letter - and if it does, make sure it is included when you paste.

Good luck,

Evan

Justin, if you can post here the site that you are expecting to add a photo to, and the words/combinations you are trying, then i will figure out if there is anything in particular that can be going wrong. As has been said, even slight changes in spaces or formatting can throw my code out of sync when looking for matches, the other possibility is if there are more than a certain number (I think from memory 500) matches then it throws a different error because there are too many to choose from. That happens when you want to add a mineral to just 'brazil' for example.

Heya All,

Thanks for the advise/tips. I wouldn't say I am new to cut and paste or troubleshooting things, so I am 100% sure that isn't the problem. The first time I had this problem was with an Amazonite from Pike's Peak. I tried 3 times, but I got real tired of trying to get it to work. The next thing I was trying to list was a kyanite from Zimbabwe. I tried the country, the exact location on MinDat and just parts of the location. Just now I was trying to put a picture of an Amethyst from the Bullfrog Mine in Nevada, but it gave me an error for Bullfrog, Bullfrog Mine, Nye, Nevada and the whole combination.

I don't think it is an error on my part. I'm not running any firewalls and my settings should affect any postings I am trying to make. So, do you have any other suggestions?

Also, am I alone with having timeout errors on this website? Sometimes for hours at a time I can't get locality or gallery pages to load. Happened earlier today and a few days ago...

Sometimes we still get timeout errrors on the site due to the number of visitors - this is now almost certainly the busiest mineralogy-related site on the web. It runs on its own dedicated server but it can still slow down sometimes.

Can you tell me exactly what happens when you enter a locality name and try to post.

I see that I have rediscovered the wheel. I saw this thread before, but didn't heed Evan's wise words. As an addendum to my posting on uploading photos. If one single word for the localty doesn't work try another SINGLE word. Cutting and pasteing leads to disaster here, for the reasons Evan gave.

Haha...

After talking about how I couldn't get the picture to upload with my boss it dawned on me...Firewall. So I just tried to upload a picture from work and BLAMO...it worked just fine. I should have thought about that right from the get go.

D'oh.

Hi,

I just mentioned my solution to this in another thread here.

I first try the upload with just the mine's name (I use the full name, including 'mine'). That works abot 65% of the time for me.

If that doesn't work, I enter the state/provedence and country. That will often bring up a shopping list of sites, with the one wanted included.

For the rare instances I cannot find the location, I go to that mineral's page and look at its list of localities, and use that to help me out in getting a successful up-load.

My first upload, Coffinite, was a real learning experience.
