How to ContributeminID duplicates question

16th May 2016 18:49 UTCJeff Weissman Expert

I noticed that some of my photos have different minID's for the same specimen. What is best, request a merge on the minID page, or just copy/paste the correct minID on the photograph's edit page?

16th May 2016 23:08 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

Copy/paste should work.

Thanks Uwe, but will this leave orphaned ID's?

17th May 2016 10:38 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Actually it is a little more complicated. The parent/child feature of photos needs to be set up for the photos also (requires a manager intervention).

There are two cases.

- If all photos show the same mineral, one of them has to become the master photo and the other ones all child photos.

- If the photos show different minerals, it's enough to give every photo the same minID.

You can just link the minIDs without setting parent/child as they will still be lined together. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't this way give you the easy way to control which is the primary photo.
