Mineral quiz

Jolyon,

About half the time the photos don't appear, and about the same amount of times only partial, or no data i.e. hardness, s.g., or streak( by the way I have a bone to pick about white vs colorless streak). I really enjoy this feature, am I not doing something right? Unfortunately, I do have a prehistoric 56K dial-up connection. Is that the problem?

PS As a former resident(40+ yrs) of NJ, USA, I know Franklin is not the most glamorous locality, or venue in the world, but it seems that it gets short shrift in the threadsa here considering the history. Two new species were apparently discovered there in the last 5 years. The Franklin mineral show at the end of each Sept is small by many standards, but the quality rates among the best. And,let's not forget about the finest fluorescent displays on earth.

I will now step off my soap box.

There is a pretty good likelyhood that it is a problem with the slow connection. The full photos get transmitted accross, so with a dial up connection it will take a fair bit of time to transmit them all. I did go through the most common two minerals to make sure that all the physical properties that are available are listed. With the entire list, there is a good chance that these properties haven't been added to the database.

Thanks Dave.

I see numerous posts that seem to be from people that are affiliated/have working knowledge of/with Mindat, but with no aknowledgement. Is Jolyon a soul entity(hear the Theremin in the backround), or are you part of a support team?

Thanks

PS Franklin,NJ still rules!!!

You might also wait until the LOADING label below the entry bar goes away. At that point all of the data for the quiz will have downloaded onto your computer. If you try to enter the answers before it has finished downloading, it might have a tendency to lock up. I did write the software for the quiz.

The quiz seems to work fine for me (I have broadband internet). Only problem I have noticed is that amorphous minerals such as opal sometimes come up on the crystal systems test, and the correct answer is just blank (no way to get the question right).

That and the fact that it seems to have a knack for picking green mimetites and yellow pyromorphites, but I think that's just bad luck...

Phil,

Thank you for the enlightenment. Is there a bio available on each of you?

Dave,

I've done so, but it doesn't help. It's the Wolfbane of my existance.

PS How many of the Mindat staff are computer experts and/or are mineral experts?

PPS Franklin,NJ still rules.

Steve,

Who are we?
Who are we?
Were the boys from chemistry.
Are we fragrant, yes I guess, we've been making H2S.

I can speak only for myself. I am probably a mineralorogist and not a mineralogist, some background in bucket chemistry. Many years spent chasing rocks around the world and though I know a little about computers and am in the process of developing a computer program I know very little about programming. A friend told me that with my skills I would not even rate script kitty. If you are a real programmer, I am sure management would love to get their hands on you and put you to work.
