Might be worth checking these grains for Hg content, as gold amalgams are often confused with PGMs. Alluvial gold often gets white and a little brittle if there was ever any placer mining in the area, due to the spilling of mercury, which readily combines with the gold.

Thanks Alfredo, when I heated a grain to red heat for a while in a tube, there was no sublimate driven off and on cooling the grain was unchanged in appearance and still non-malleable on the "white" end.
