PhotosCopper - Burgess Mine, Carlow Township, Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada

This is a photo which I blindly attributed for copper when I first started to post on mindat. Despite only being in my user only gallery, I would like to redeem myself and figure-out what it might be before erasing it entirely. Nothing from the locality list seems to match the metallic-like strip in the center of the matrix. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Tarnished pyrite?

10th Nov 2015 17:36 UTCMatt Courville

It seems to have an orange/brown-like color to it like that of household copper pipes, which is why I thought of copper initially. The matrix it is in also has a murky green/yellow tone to it, which made me think of weathered green copper. It it also possible that someone left this at Burgess mine from another locality, but that would seem to imply too much traveling?

Hi Matt,

Is it magnetic? If yes, pyrrhotite

If not, break it and see what the fresh colour is. That should tell you what it probably is.

I once found beautiful black cubes on gemmy quartz crystals I was sure was uraninite (I had no scintillation / geiger counters) from the Evans Lou mine. Of course, they turned out to be weathered pyrite and I was greatly disappointed.

Thanks Rob and Phil, I will check if it is magnetic this evening, and chip off a piece if necessary.
