Hi all,
Recently I purchased an old collection fluorite specimen with the following details
It was labeled Cumberland, Great Britain.
Colour: Pale purple changing to vivid purple in the sunlight
Crystals: Gemmy edges, frosted milky white cores up to 2,5 cm
Associations: Black limestone matrix covered by a thin layer of Siderite, which is completely covered by fluorite (allthough some holes do show the original mineralisation. Some fluorite cubes are overgrown on one side by small rosettes of brown siderite. This siderite doesn't grow directly on the fluorite cube face but on a thin layer of gemmy doubly terminated quartz. As far as I can tell no obvious galena xls present.
Damage: Since it is a very large and heavy specimen approx 25 x 20 cm, some cubes show evidence of contact damage on sides and corners.
I haven't got my proper photo setup at my disposal at the moment so I had to improvise, I hope the pictures are clear enough.
There are only two localities (correct me if I'm wrong) in the pennines that have produced similar fluorite: Boltsburn and Allenheads. I tend to go for Henry's vein at Allenheads, but I want to confirm my suspicion. All thoughts much appreciated!
Cheers!
Philip
