Swedish Babingtonite Locality - Fagelmyra?

Swedish Babingtonite Locality - Fagelmyra?

I have some pretty nice babingtonite crystals with calcite from "Fagelmyra, Sweden", collected by I. Johannsen. I do not see this locality in MIndat, but they look similar to the specimens from here:
"Grönsjöberget, Borlänge, Dalarna, Sweden".
Does anyone know if this is the same place?

I am sure this is a mixup from what I gather online with a short reference to an excursion in 2003
[www.geonord.org]

Fågelmyra and Grönsjöberg are two stops on the same mineralogical excursion, the former seems to be a granite quarry whereas the latter is a limestone quarry. It is not farfetched to think that material from one place got labeled with the other name.

cheers

Actually, I purchased the specimen in 1997, but maybe the trip was done over several years. I assume these are two towns fairly close together?

Hi Kelly !
It's pretty amazing what you write about discoveries of Babingtonit at Fågelmyra.
Last year I found just Babingtonit at that place. At dumped large piles of beautiful eyes granite situated between the mountains Fågelmyra and Grönsjöberget I have found cracks containing small crystals with rock crystal, titanite, zircon, an amphibole, blue apatite, beautiful prehnitkristaller and black babingtonit.
I have no information on any previously made these findings in that location.
The dumped granite comes from a large quarry in use in just Fågelmyra. It's incredibly beautiful to look at these minerals under the microscope.
I am enclosing some pictures taken during the 20 times magnification.(Apatit and Babingtonit)

Although I have made findings of beautiful babingtonit in calcite from the limestone mine in Grönsjöberg

Sorry Kelly !

I thought i had attached some photos.
I will try again. I'm not so used to write on this site.

The pictures are great, and the translation to English was good too. I am especially impressed with the blue apatite. The specimen I have is just babingtonite crystals (2-3 mm.) with calcite crystals (1-2 mm.) so I cannot say for sure if it is from granite but it is perhaps more likely from limestone. Thank you for posting the information and the pictures. It sounds like a good find!

Hi Kelly,

Here's one being offered and labeled as being from there you may or may not have seen, thought I'd post it for you. Good luck with it. [translate.google.com]

I have the same citation from a 1997 David Shannon label for a specimen appearing to be etched from a calcite filled vein with babingtonite, quartz, titanite and a 'mountain leather' type amphibole. Shannon was reasonably careful about his labeling. Fagelmyra seems likely. The India and Massachusetts/ Rhode Island locations are in basalt if I'm not mistaken. Are there any basalt dikes near the granite quarry?
Thanks,

Hi,

Although I have not been at either Fågelmyra or Grönsjöberg, I'd like to point out that;

NE of the Borlänge town is a mountain called FÅGELBERGET. The Borlänge Energy do have an environmental station there called FÅGELMYRA.
In the Swedish Geological Survey publ Aa 189- there exist a quarry on the FÅGELBERGET and one limestone quarry SE of it called GRÖNSJÖBERGET.

A search on [kso.lantmateriet.se] (appr.search maps and place names(=ortnamn) in Sweden) do not give any hit for Fågelmyra- but five around Falun/ Borlänge for FÅGELMYREN (= BIRDS BOG).

Search on www.sgu.se give hits for babingtonite+ Grönsjöberg but not for the combination with Fågelmyra. Fågelmyra give hits for geohydrology and waste dump.....

Thus I fully agree with Johan Kjellman that it might be a mix with loc names- but babingtonites with calcite&limestone should likely go with Grönsjöberg. ( I do have bab's from both places and also need to get things straight). See what I can find further on.

Hi again,

Yesterday I got confirmation from the curator at the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm that the Babingtonite is from Grönsjöberget - the limestone quarry in the western rim of the said mountain.

Babingtonite is known ONLY from this location in the vicinity of Borlänge. It exist ~10 more limestone quarries in the Borlänge-Falun area and if someone have found something in these, is not known.
