Could be a chlorite group mineral, could be a serpentine group mineral, could be an amphibole group mineral - need a LOT more data!!! Hardnes, streak, density, etc. Read the "How To" flagged at the top of this forum.......(by the late Alan Plante).

Just realised what it is mate its a 2 to 500 million year old sponge, ( limestone )

2-500 million? that time frame is very very large. What makes you suggest it?

Sorry Karl i will check the sponge and fossils like it are abundant in the stainton gravel beds, but to be honest they don't really do it for me! but ime sure ive seen while looking them up that this type of sponge was around for that type of time scale.

Sponges as a Phylum of animals have, however the families in the phylum have not, and individual species are certainly not.

So where did the age description come from?

Actually heath, Given the small nature of the attached image, I cant even tell if it is in fact a sponge. Who made the identification, and what were the characters present that where used in this determination?

Gravel beds are an unlikely geologic environment to find sponge fossils, unless they have been reworked which is unusual. Better and more varied pictures might help.

Heath,

These are very reminiscent of "melicaria" from Mexico. They are the calcite interiors of sedimentary nodules where the interiors remained after the other parts were solved away. Some of these are labelled as quartz although I believe some testing has been done and were found to be carbonate, probably calcite.

Thanks Stephenie yes it looks very simmiler ive tested it with viniger and there is noreaction at all both with the viens? and hard clay ps and ime sorry to have to keep bringing this up but the hard clay is attracted to a magnet ie it will pull a rare earth magnet and a lesser streanghth magnet.

Heath, since there was no reaction to the vinegar they could be quartz then. Either way I think they are the interior remains of nodules and look cool.

Good luck with your excavations and blogs.

On the same unknown subject how about this ive had it along time now and still don't know what the shell is or the rock its in? again i am sorry as it seems to offend some! but this fossil atracts a rare earth magnet although it does not atract my less powerfull magnets
