amethyst crystal inclusion

with your permission..pls forgive the photography..just wondering what the inclusions are most likely tobe..
believed to be from Uruguay..Artigas...all help appreciated..thanks in advance

Goethite is a common inclusion in Brazilian amethyst and by the looks of those radiating tufts that would be my guess.

Goethite. I've got dozens of these - pretty golden tufts of goethite fibers embedded in the amethyst, mostly from Brazil.

Hi all and thanks,,it is from Brasil and not Uruguay...locality unknown..the tufts are very dark in colour..should this lead me too believe..more likely hematite...?

Hi Dermot,

Although they are both iron oxides, I would think they are goethite rather than hematite. Perhaps Amir or Luiz will see this thread and chime in.

I suppose hematite is possible, but I think virtually all of these specimens from Brazil contain goethite. Here are a few on Mindat for you to compare with:

As you can see, some of these are very dark, too.

Well Dan, at least we agree!! Hematite is found in Brazil quartz, many of these occur with rutile, see example. They do appear quite different.

The inclusions in amethyst from Rio Grande do Sul and from Uruguay are normally goethite, and show a radiated fibrous habit, and golden to dark brown color; therefore, on amethyst crystals found in pegmatites in Espírito Santo state they are normally hematite, and may appear either as tabular crystals (showing dark red color) or as thin and long prismatic crystals, with black color (unfortunately on the mineral market these inclusions are wrongly referred to as "lepidocrocite").

Amethystine Quartz with Hematite, reported from Brazil but site unknown. Dan's inclusions look like Goethite to me - but in focus pics would help!

hi dermot . you can easily seen the dagger blade shape typical of goethite inclusions in amethyst .this kind of in inclusions in amethyst not just exist in brazil an uruguay but can also find in many place in the world like; India, china, madagascar and many other places .they often mislabeled as fire quartz ,lepidocrocite included Quartz for the variety in clear quartz and super seven or many others new age named for this inclusions in amethyst. if you're not sure of the original mining locality your stone can came from somewhere else than south america. many sellers don't care about the locality and mix together all their materials with the same look . good chance to find without a matrix. bye
