I not long ago got this specimen of a brecciated agate with some pale amethyst. It is from the collection of John Sinkankas. It was supposed to be from from Idar Oberstein, but we don't have anything just like it from there and I was hoping that some of our German brethern would be able to confirm that.

Hi Rock ask here for agate from Idar-Oberstein

http://www.mineralienverein-freisen.de/index.php

contact

http://www.mineralienverein-freisen.de/de/kontakt/kontakt_de.html

or

http://www.deutsches-mineralienmuseum.de/

but last year in the museum i don't remember to see similar agate show in photo.

In Germany there are more agate sites

Or here

This year i visit Juchem quarry for the second time but i think your agate not come from Juchem quarry, and probably not from Kaulenberg

The labels are of no help. They say "unverkäuflich" (not for sale) and "reserviert" (reserved).

The specimen could very well be from Schlottwitz.

Rock, do you have a detail pic? Brecciated agate is not uncommon in the Saar-Nahe area but details may matter .. may want to pass this question to fellow agate specialists here in the area ...

cheers

Roger

Rock,

Can't say I've ever seen, nor do I own, any agate samples from Idar-Oberstein which are brecciated like that nor even without any typical crimson to reddish purple, with distinctive centers or banding of pure white, buff, pale pink to even a pale lemon yellow. On a quick review here, I will note some misgivings about one of the Lavinski image present in the Idar-Obersyein gallery with a somewhat similar dull coloration, however, I suppose no one person can have seen it all. :D

There are brecciated agate localities with amethyst from Sachen (Saxony) as Amir noted, that may appear at least structurally like this specimen, Schlottwitz in particular, was indeed largely brecciated. It may be from there, but I've no instant recognition of that fact to offer it.
