Identity HelpDavyne Myanmar

I recently acquired from a very reputable dealer a tiny chip (about 5mm x 5mm) of blue translucent crystalline material with a white-to-colorless granular accompanying material. The label states that it is Davyne from Mogok in Myanmar. There is no entry in Mindat for Davyne outside of Europe... On a google search I came across several offers of similar material and a short abstract by GE Harlow from the Minerals and Museums conference in Melborne, Dec 2000, which mentions davyne from the Mogok stone tract... Has anyone any further information about this material? Is there a problem with it that has prevented it being incorporated in Mindat?

I shall attach a 'photo of mediocre quality; my microscope camera has ceased to run and this one is taken hand-held through one tube of the 'scope and juggling around to get the best focus and lighting I could with one hand! I hope it may help.

Best wishes to all

Thanks Tim. Some years ago I obtained similar looking material, perhaps a tad more green, from Gunnar Farber labelled Davyne with the locality "Mogok, Sagaing District, Mandalay / Myanmar". He told me it was x-rayed by some one. I sent a bit to the ROM and they PXRDed Lazurite C. Later Fernando Camera found it to be Lazurite O with SCXRD which I trust. Subsequently this polytype of Hauyne was named Vladimirivanovite. I haven't entered any of this at Mindat because I can't make any sense of the locality. Any help would be appreciated.

So you probably have Vladimirivanovite from Myanmar, but you would need single crystal XRD to confirm it. (Honest Afghani sodalites can have this colour)

Could you please send me a link or a copy of George's abstract if you have it?

Hello Rob,

Nice to hear from you. That was indeed the origin of my chip too. I too find the locality a bit mysterious, but you have the knowledge to comment on these sodalite type minerals which leave me confused (by the way thanks for your article on the Sar-e-Sang mines in MR - it helped a lot!). I don't think I shall test the tiny chip I have - just give it a conditional label and comment in the catalogue...

The article I found on google at : http://research.amnh.org/users/gharlow/MogokAbsDistrib.pdf

I hope this helps.

Still hoping you will make it to Lyon one day...

Cheers

Tim

Specimen information from Gunnar Färber should always be taken with a very big grain of salt.
