I would like know what the black staff on sapphire crystal?

25th Oct 2016 03:47 UTCIan Nicastro

Any idea where this was collected? This looks like these Sapphire are hosted in Marble/Calcite matrix. I can't really see the black stuff well enough to see the shape. I've seen some Sapphire crystals that had small crystals of black biotite mica on them but those were from a different type of deposit as this, they were hosted in schist, so I don't think that's what you have here. I know Spinel and Rutile can be common inclusions. I've seen some sapphires that had Baddeleyite crystals that grew inside them, but I don't believe that is very common and the Baddeleyite in those sapphires looked a metallic black upon close inspection.

Could just opaque sapphires due to that not all corundum does not come out gem quality

Knowing where this specimen comes from might help in figuring out what the coating is.

From what I can see (blurry photo), maybe some sort of manganese/iron-bearing mineral? :-S
