Meiji Microscopes

Hello All,

I am ready to buy a fine scope, and would welcome some feedback from the group. My budget is around $5000.00. Meiji seems to be the name most people have recommended....Thanks for any advice you can offer. I do plan to do photography with it..thanks, Joe

Joe, Call Jim Ross at Absolute Clarity...he is great and sells new and reconditioned Meiji scopes. I was having some trouble using mine for photography and just stopped by his office the other day for some pointers...he gladly spent some time with me figuring out what I was doing wrong. He's knowledgeable and collects minerals himself.

hi howard,

thanks...yes, he has actually worked up some quotes for me on the Meiji's. I will most probably work with him when I buy one...the other company mentioned was Mineralogical Research. What scope did you wind up buying?
Thanks, Joe

I originally purchased an EMZ-8TR. The view was phenomenal, but I was disappointed with the depth of field in photos unless I spent a lot of time stacking photos with Helicon. I then traded it for a reconditioned RZ that has a diaphragm and much more precise focus and added a mechanical stage. The photos are much better, though I have a lot to learn before I will be satisfied with the results. I also bought 10X, 15X, and 20X ultra wide field eyepieces. I use the 10X 95% of the time, and the 15X the rest. The 20X is fun to fool around with but doesn't provide that much for the loss of image quality at high power.

A TechniQuip fiber optic light source has been a great addition as well.

I already had a Canon 30D SLR camera, so just needed the accessories to hook it up to the scope. The software that came with the camera is awesome. I connect via a USB cable and can control the camera from my laptop and immediately get the image on the screen.

I have been having a lot of fun with the scope, not only on minerals but on all kinds of ordinary objects as well.

Good luck...for that budget you can get a setup similar to mine and I think you will be quite happy with it.
