NEW MINERAL APPROVALS WITHDRAWN IN JANUARY 2013

IMA No. 2009-088

Chromo-alumino-povondraite

Susequent analytical work undertaken by the

authors show this material to be a chromdravite.

NEW MINERAL APPROVALS Withdrawn in

APRIL 2013

IMA No. 2011-096

Fuxiaotuite

Approval for the name of this mineral has been

withdrawn. The mineral itself retains its

previous approval.

APPROVED NOMENCLATURE CHANGES IN FEBRUARY 2013

IMA No. 2011-035

Ferrikaersutite

The proposal 2011-035 was approved in 2011

(see CNMNC Newsletter 10). The approved

name has been changed to oxo-magnesiohastingsite,

to be consistent with the new

amphibole nomenclature. The endmember

formula of oxo-magnesio-hastingsite is

NaCa2(Mg2Fe3+3)(Si6Al2)O22O2.

NOMENCLATURE PROPOSAL APPROVED IN MARCH 2013

IMA 13-A: A new root-name for the amphibole

composition □Mn2+2Fe2+5Si8O22(OH)2

In the newly-approved amphibole report, the use

of the prefix mangano- for Mn2+ dominant as the

B cation has been abolished. Accordingly, the

mineral with endmember composition

Mn2+2Fe2+5Si8O22(OH)2, formerly described as

proto-mangano-ferro-anthophyllite (IMA No.

1986-007), and mentioned as ‘‘ferro-rootname3’’

in the amphibole report, deserves a new root

name. The composition Mn2+2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2,

mentioned as ‘‘rootname3’’ in the amphibole

report, is now assigned the name suenoite, in

memory of the late Professor Shigeho Sueno (d.

2001), who described the new mineral IMA No.

1986-037; this now becomes proto-ferrosuenoite.

The proto- and ferro- prefixes are for

the Pnmn symmetry and for the Fe2+ dominance

among C cations, respectively.

NOMENCLATURE PROPOSAL APPROVED IN MAY 2013

IMA 13-B: Revision of the chemical

formula of comancheite

On the basis of a single crystal X-ray diffraction

study, it has been shown that the accepted

chemical formula of the mineral comancheite is

incorrect. Comancheite was described in 1981

as a mercury oxychloride-bromide with formula

Hg13(Cl,Br)8O9. It is in fact a mercury nitride

with formula Hg2+55N3–24(NH2,OH)4(Cl,Br)34.

Marco,

great work - as allways.

Is the formula of IMA No. 2013-017 (Ophirite) real and in which group/supergroup will we find this mineral? Sorry for my silly question!

31st Jul 2013 04:03 UTCAnthony Kampf Manager

The formula provided in the IMA proposal reflects the extensive substitutions in the various cation sites and the fact that we were not able to balance the ideal formula using the dominant cation in each site. Since that submission, we have determined Mn to be 3+ rather than 2+, which has allowed us to provide a simpler ideal formula. The paper is just about ready for submission.

Is Joteite the small clusters of very light blue to nearly colorless, accicular crystals found on some of the rruffite specimens?

Yes. See the photo below:

Thanks Stuart! The crystals I'm noting actually look much different than what you pictured. They are bundles of needles, very light blue to almost colorless. They are growing on and with single crystals of rruffite but easily separate and distinguishable from both the rruffite and the mansfieldite. I noticed them immediately when first examining the specimen and wondered what they were. Took a quick (terrible) photo of them. First is just a shot of one of the clusters. Second is a single rruffite with clusters of the other phase below and behind it. Sorry, I know this isn't the place for identifications but since I have your attention......

There are at least four other potentially new minerals that occur in the joteite assemblage. Three of these occur in aggregates of light blue to blue-green xls, but I haven't been able to find decent single xls of these. The crystals that you describe sound like the colorless acicular xls for which we have gotten a structure and which we are working on describing. It is a Ca-Al arsenate.

Sorry, Jason. I reacted too quickly to your description of the xls being light blue to colorless needles. After looking at your image, I am pretty sure that the mineral you are asking about is one of the new ones that I mentioned as not yielding good single xls. It is a Ca-Cu-Al arsenate.

Hello Jason, Tony and Stuart:

the balls-cluster of spiky xls shown on Jason's pics, seems very different from the new acicular As-Ca arsenate posted by Tony. I may suggest that those colorless light bluish owned by Jason, could still be Ruffite or Mansfieldite.

Sometimes we have collected Ruffite gathering together as balls-like xls. The Joteite is NOT in paregenesis with Ruffite, since it has been found in a different pocket of the adit. Those green aggregates shown on the second Tony's pic is another of our challenges: till now we haven't been able to collect decent xls of that new Cu arsenate.

Hope that I could give a littke contribution.

Thanks Tony. The second photo definitely resembles what I'm seeing most. Hopefully it won't be doomed to obscurity (comparing this material to what I just sent you from Foote, the Foote mineral is probably doomed).

2nd Aug 2013 14:08 UTCJason B. Smith Expert

Maurizio, I would assume that the clusters of needles I'm seeing are a different phase than the rruffite because on this particular specimen all the rruffite is in single crystals and the needles have grown on the rruffite and then sometimes the needles grew first and the rruffite after. Seems to be two different phases that crystallized at about the same time.

2nd Aug 2013 16:22 UTCMaurizio Dini Expert

Jason

try to get closer pictures of your bluish colorless ball-like needles. I need to know more about them, since the Ca-Al-As acicular phase has been found in another area of the adit: till now we never found them with ruffite. this of course is not a rule, but it's a parameter.

Maybe will need to discuss it by email, here is mine:

triclinic with R-3m this does not fit together. R-3m = trigonal

R-3m seems to be wrong?

IMA 13-A

IMA No. 1986-037 = ammonioalunite and is an alunite and should now become the amphibole proto-ferrosuenoite? Maybe i misunderstood something here, but this seems to be wrong.

1986-007, I think.

1986-007 was proto-mangano-ferro-anthophyllite (now ferrosuenoite)

6th Aug 2013 13:55 UTCAlfredo Petrov Manager

Wouldn't proto-mangano-ferro-anthophyllite now have to be proto-ferrosuenoite rather than just ferrosuenoite?

6th Aug 2013 14:31 UTCStefan Schorn

Thank you for finding out which mineral it should be

1986-007 was proto-mangano-ferro-anthophyllite (now ferrosuenoite)

now proto-ferrosuenoite ;-)

A hyphen is missing.

Should be proto-ferro-suenoite.

7th Aug 2013 07:02 UTCHans Kloster

Perhaps this explanation is correct:

IMA 1986:

6 Protoferro-anthophyllite, now proto-ferrosuenoite

7 Protomangano-ferro-anthophyllite, now suenoite or ferrosuenoite

Cesarferreiraite (IMA 2012-099) looks like the arsenate analogue of ferrolaueite.

12th Aug 2013 17:45 UTCOlav Revheim Manager

I don't quite get the new revised amphibole nomenclature (IMA 13A) referred to in Marco's initial post.

In the amhibole report (Hawthorne et.al 2012), the "rootname 3" corresponds to the monoclinic amphibole, (i.e cummingtonite/grunerite series), and the composition Mn2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2 corresponds to the mineral previously known as manganocummingtonite and ferro-rootname3 would then be the mineral previously known as manganogruenerite.

The IMA 13A describes "rootname 3" as an orthorhombic amphibole ( i.e anthophyllite/gedrite series) with the composition Mn2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2. The IMA nomenclature report has no rootname for an orthorhombic amphibole with such composition as far as I can see.

Would suenoite then refer to the orthorhombic or monoclinic amphibole of composition Mn2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2? If it is meant to refer to the orthorhombic amphibole, what should we then call the monoclinic amphibole of this composition, referred to as rootname 3 in the amphibole nomenclature report?

Jim, you are right, cesarferreiraite is the As-analogue of ferrolaueite; Ricardo Scholz found only 2 albite specimens containing very few crystal clusters of cesarferreiraite, and unfortunately most of the material was consumed on the process of the description of the new species.
