Madagascar locality help required March 07, 2012 05:44PM |

I recently purchased a specimen labelled "Limonite after Pyrite, Darainia, Madagascar", which I think is a misprint of Daraina. However, this locality is not listed on Mindat. Has anyone here come across minerals from Darainia/Daraina, or can suggest an alternative locality for such a specimen?
Many thanks
David

Hi David,
The most "famous" Daraina in Mada is located, as said Tomasz, in Sava region between Ambilobe and Vohemar, known espacially for gold, epidote and sphene deposits all around. But you have few villages in Diana and Sava regions (north of Mada) named Daraina. I think that Tomasz pointed the right one.
Possibly your specimen comes from Matsaborivaky area, known for massive epidote crystals (up to 25kg+), and from where I've seen few pyrite specimens.
I don't see another locality "around" this Daraina where pyrite occurs. But could be some.
Hope this help, not 100% sure.
