Morgan Hill Poppy jasper
October 31, 2005 10:06PM
Hello,
Cool site I just found!

My husbands' grandfather used to own Morgan Hill mine where the
poppy jasper was mine was. We have a large rock that has been sawn in two at our Az Mineral Museum. We have learned the cracks in it were because 'they' dynamited the mine. There are several cracks that have filled in with whatever material fills in cracks, in parts of this rock.
I know MH PJ is very collectible. How do I go about putting a price on it? I've had several inquiries, but don't have a clue.
Thank you.

Morgan hill poppy jasper is really a very nice jasper and was considered perhaps the best of its type until the new "ocean jasper" from Madagascar put in its appearance a few years back. The new material from Madagascar sells wholesale in Tucson for about $40 per kg for polished thin slabs although it can me more or less depending on the quality. Some guy called me the other day who had apparently gotten hold of an old horde of Morgan Hill jasper and he was asking $20 to $30 a pound for his material and it was more or less in rough chunks. I don't know if he was or will be successful in selling it at those prices or not. If the material you have is not polished I would suggest that before offering it for sale that you give it a coat of clear lacquer to bring out the color. Check
Ebay and see if anyone is offering Morgan Hill stuff and what it has been selling for. It may be that putting it out on Ebay might be the best way to max out the dollar potential of you material.

Hello - I just discovered this stone over the weekend; having lived near Morgan Hill for nearly 15 years, I was surprised I had never seen or heard of it.

Can you give me some detail or address where the mine was?

Thanks!

Poppy jasper can be found along ... road generally adjacent to Chesboro creek and up to Chesbero reervoir. Poppy Jasper is most easily retrieved from east weast hills or mounds. Dont get arrested or shot as sometimes happens. Jasper can be found along the shores of Andserson reservoir, not telling where. Non latice Geodes can be found along the shores of some other bay area lakes, as well as amethyst, citrine, cinibar and milky quartz, not fessing on those locations either. To the best of my knowledge there are no "legally" operating mines in morgan hill city limits. Where a lot of this is coming from is rather obvious and can be tracked directly to the spot it was stolen or in some situations mined from. Poppy jasper can easily be tracked to its initial mining location by the color and size of the inclusions. Would you like google earth coordinates? Nah, im not that evil.
NO, I dont care about spelling as this is a 30 second response.

Hey Steve,
Interesting, as guadalupe is geographically very close. Fishing isnt good there so I havnt spent much time around that body of water... and movement around the area is extremelly difficult if you get poision oak, not to mention privately owned besisdes the immediate lake area.
There is a hill named jasper right abouts. I have never seen any poppy jasper from the immediate (within 2 mile) area. Wait I take that back I have seen very dark red jasper with white quartz, but not the poppy variety as seen just south around MH. Ill take a look on the way home tomorrow though (1 in 100 chance of finding something). I've only compaired examples from the MH and south sj area more adjacent to almaden area.
Do you perhaps have any photos or links? Im curious to see if my theory holds, photos of more samples are always appreciated.

Hey Baucuss,
A search for guadalupe jasper on ebay tonight turns up four auctions with photos. The first is for what I've commonly seen called almaden poppy jasper. The rest are more typical guadalupe jasper. The sellers claim the source as the Almaden mine area, which I think would be closer to the reservoir than the town.

Roger Pabian's agate database (http://csd.unl.edu/agates/agatelexiconinterface.asp)
lists the guadalupe reservoir as the source, but there's also some confusion with the Llagas creek material...
thanks

Yes this jasper is from the Morgan Hill south of San Francisco California. The vein runs several miles and unfortunately all the outcroppings are located on private property. One mine is located in a county park but is fenced off and you will be arrested for digging at this location. Too bad because the best poppy jasper was found here. It is not impossible to get this material but it is very difficult unless you know someone who owns property. I have included a picture of a 100 pound sculpture I did of some of the best material.

Hi,
This sculpture you have pictured in absolutely stunning! So you must know someone...right? I am attracted to this rock, and am into its healing properties.
Any chance I could get a piece?

My parents live near Chesbro Reservoir, off Uvas Rd. I'm going to help them look for some, as they have about 14 acres right in the location mentioned. What rocks are they usually found in? Chert beds?

seems like I've been all over Morgan Hill, and yet have found any spots to find even a nugget of Poppy Jasper.

I did however, find some nice boulders of vibrant red jasper around chesbro res.

can I trouble you with the question so which park has the fenced off area where poppy jasper used to be dug? was just curious if I passed thru that area or not?

what else do you collect around here?

Anderson seems to be a nice collecting spot!

I finaly found the wonderfull stone! I did an erlyer post Aug. 2006 wondering how to find the Poppy Jasper. After that I did a lot of reserch that led me to the spot. I can not say ware it is, but some time in the futuer I will tell the rock club ware it is. It is on publick land not on private land. Somebody els had also been digging at the sight. There were no sines or any clame markers to indicate it was against the law to dig there. There was a fence that was in bad shape but the Jasper was out side the fence. The place was quiet and paeceful. If a cop had seen our car packed at the spot they did not bother to come investigating to finde my freind and I and fine us. So maby all the rumers of nasty penaltys are just rumers to scare Poppy Jasper hunters away from town. My freind had herd that a little girl was fined $400 dollors just because she had a cupple of rocks in her pocket. If this was for real what in the world is rong with the Morgon Hill Government? Stuff on publick land is owned by all persons not just the Gov. It is totally unfair to rockhounds to fine them. Now if the gready Gov. wants its owne personal mine it should go buy one on some private land some ware (I am sure you, Gov., Is rich anuff to do so compared to us much lower income folks). I think there are a lot more publick hunting places out there to that are being kept a secrit. There is just to much stuff being sold on the internet for there not to be more publick hunting places. I will keep having fun looking for other spots. Happy rockhounding every one.

POOPY JASPER LOCATION REVEALED ! !

Well some body is rearly wacking the heck out of the jasper I found. The huge bolder with red poppys on a black back round is now gone. Some body took it during the past 9 or so days. I want to give every one a chance to have some of that rock before that person/s take every thing. So here is how to get there. Oak Creek Park, originaly Silvera Park, is your final destination. From 152 take Watsonvill Road all the way to the Monteray Hyway. Turn right on to hyway. Keep going till you are passing over Lagas Creek. Turn onto pull out right after bridge. Walk down paved path till you see a worn steep slope to your left. You will see a fence at the top when you look up. The jasper is to the right side of the fence. The story is that this used to be a mine. Then the city baried it hoping on one would find it. I think many poeple know of this spot befor it was baried. Be carefull, if the polece finde you they will steal your loot and maby even fine you is what I heard from a local resident. Heavy duty equipment is what you need if you want to try your luck on the big bolder : huge weges and slege hammer havyer than 8 pounds. Or you can try your luck digging in the debree on the ground looking for left over peaces with a rock hammer or other pointed tool. I had good luck diging in the dirt and debree and found manny good peaces to polish. May the Lord Jesus bless all with good findes. Happy rockhounding every one.
