Greetings. I am going to Boston in the near future. We will be travelling through Connecticut, most likely on route 84 to route 90. Are there any open collecting areas that I can access? Thanks! Gary

There's the Simpson Quarry in South Glastonbury, CT. The site is only about 20 minutes south of Hartford. Good place for beryl and other pegmatite minerals. Feel free to contact me off post if interested and I'll gladly provide you with more info.

Sure thing! I wouldn't be able to take you their myself, but I'll gladly give the address as well as tips if you plan on visiting the site. Found some nice material during a trip back in April.

Try Roxbury Garnet Mine in Roxbury CT. Its not far off of I84 but the roads are rather confusing out there. Plentiful almandine and staurolites. $5 to park your car.

Nice green Jasper @ Horn pond, in Woburn, MA. 23 minutes North of Boston. Fair to say, some of the best Ive seen from this area. Its a walking path with older tailings from possibly the blasting of the high tension towers, or ? Either way, there is some nice material there and its safe to say Ive never been paid any attention to for my labor.

Thanks John, that might be someplace we could go to. Turns out that we have to go straight up to Boston to deal with some hotel reservation issues, no stops along the way. I will have the afternoon to do something, possibly visiting the Harvard Mineralogical Museum. Looks like a quarry/former quarry in Woburn is a possiblity as well? Can you give me directions to the Horn Pond? Thanks a lot! Gary

That's too bad. I personally would definitely recommend Harvard, Awesome place!thumbs up Great mineral exibit, with lots of other interesting stuff as well (Fossils, taxidermied animals, etc.) Also, if you manage to check out the quarry in Woburn (which I would assume is the Blueberry mountain Quarry), be sure to let me know. I recently started a thread here on Mindat relating to the site and have been hopeing to get an opportunity of checking the place out myself.

Yes. it was the Blueberry Mountain Quarry that I was interested in. Peter Cristofono has taken a lot of photos of minerals from there, hopefully he will respond to the pm I sent him. I will let you know how things work out, thanks for your help, Matt. Gary

Hi Gary,

Google Horn Pond, Woburn Mass. Get directions from current location.

On the back side of the pond, (roughly 1/2 miles trip) there will be small dumps on your right hand side. As you look up towards the power lines, there will be a section between where you are standing and an access road (which also seems to be a stump and lawn debris dump). Between the access road, the dump and along the pond is the tailings.

If you don't mind, Ide love to see what you score. Shoot me a private message. Maybe we can hook up sometime

Greetings. Just returned from our trip to Boston. I came home empty-handed. The site at Horn Pond was a bust, I did not find any interesting minerals there after a while and it was 94 degrees, so we gave up. We took a ride over to the Blueberry Mountain Quarry on Holton Street and Micro Drive. There are a lot of exposed rock faces and a lot of loose material but, as it was a weekend, I did not ring doorbells and ask for permission to collect. I do not know if anyone would be allowed to collect there. One site was a hospital parking lot and the others were behind industrial buildings. I suppose it could be possible if permission was obtained. I put up a few photos on my page if anyone is interested. The best part of the trip was all of the exposed rock faces and mineralized veins along route 84 in Connecticut and route 90 in Massachusetts. My wife was driving so I got to see them all, except we were traveling at 70mph so it was a quick look! I would like to plan a trip in the future to go through some of the places in Conn. and Western Mass. Gary
