According to one page I see on the internet, "Pulsite was recently discovered in Oregon. It contains a combination of silver, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel and zinc"

Pulsite is NOT a genuine mineral name. As far as I can tell it is NOT a valid rock name either.

Whether it is some natural material or even some artificial material I have no idea.

It's just another fake mineral name dreamed up by someone in order to sell whatever it is they have.

This is psilomelane under a different (bogus) name. I sincerely doubt that it is from Oregon.

Supposed sapphires in Harney County, Oregon

The internet has a geological site mentioning that "Sapphire locations have been filed upon all sections 16, 17, and 21, in township 25 range 35 east (in 1940)."
another site expressed doubt that these in fact were sapphires, and suggested an
alternative gem explanation. Has anyone heard anything about this?

This mineral is real.
It comes from a mine in Oregon, location is secret. The owners of the mine are Jim & Lena Puls (hence the name pulsite).

There are rough and finished pieces being sold at the Rogue Gem & Geology Show in Grants Pass Oregon this weekend.
The mineral is a speckled silver and black color.

This is being marketed by J&L Mining Co. from the Roseburg, Oregon, area. It's not cheap!

Pulsite got it's name from the last name of the individuals that found the stones... I know the people that found it...

So if I find something shiny this weekend, I can call it Vervloetite... ???
THAT is going to be very expensive too! B)
Also from a very secret locality of course, THAT really adds value...

Pulsite was found by my grandfather. There is only one vein of it in the entire world. He's dug around other mountains in the area, but none had it. He mines it himself!

Farkle Snap! I can't spell my own last name right!

Has the rock called pulsite ever been characterized in a peer reviewed journal or has there been an article about it in any amateur magazine? Has anyone ever made a thin section of the material and identified the components in the rock? Until this happens is is just a rock that some guy is digging and trying to sell. You can give it any name you want and I guess pulsite is as good as any but it won't be referenced here on mindat till it appears in the literature somewhere. It is very unlikely that the IMA would ever give a mineral the name pulsite.

My girlfriends dad jim is the one that owns the mining claim where this stuff comes from and i just spent all day helping him pack it out, so ive seen it and know how heavy it is compared to a rock and its not just a rock and is unlike anything ive ever seen before.

There seems to be some snobs out there who seem to think it has to be written up in some periodical to be a real rock. If you had found this material you would have called it a rock and given it whatever name you chose. Pretty sure that there are more rocks and minerals that were named after the person who found it than not. Get a life, go find your own rock material and quit being jealous. I know Jim Puls personally and his material is real, and well worth what he is asking for it. I just spent the morning cutting this rock material into slabs and it is gorgeous and will cut excellent cabochons. I waited 2 years to get my Pulsite because it is so rare and hard to get. It was well worth the wait. Hope someday you realize that Jim is a hard working individual with more class than any of you who are belittling him to make yourself feel important.

Keith, it not got anything to do with snobbery, and everything to do with facilitating communication. If everyone is allowed to make up any name they fancy for anything they find, then eventually there would be lots of different names for the same thing, and none of us would know what the other guy was talking about. That's why there is an established procedure for naming new minerals. If someone just makes up a new name themselves, without proper investigation as to whether that material already has a name or not, well, we can't stop people from doing that, and it might get a good reception in some jewellery trade magazine, but don't expect it to get a very good reception on a scientific website like this one.

Don't be a jerk.
The mineral is real, I know the owner of the mine. He sells it at rock shows in SW Oregon. Come visit and see it for yourself, buy a piece and pay for a assay. It's not like anything I have ever seen before.

So we have a bunch of idiots coming here claiming "pulsite" is a real mineral.

It's not, and I hope that anyone coming here because of a Google search for the term "pulsite" realises that this is nothing more than a marketing trick by someone who has found a pretty rock and wants to sell it.

There is NO official mineral by the name 'pulsite'. Also note many of the anonymous messages or messages posted by first-time posters above are highly dubious and likely to be posted by those promoting this stone.

I have no problems with people trying to sell nice pretty rocks they have found. But making up names for them, especially after themselves, is at best egotistical and at worst deliberately deceptive.

You have been warned!
