If you are familiar with Picher, Oklahoma you might be interested to learn about its fate. The area is the center of a superfund site and is being bought out by the government because of the lead contamination. The area is also prone to collapse due to huge underground areas left without support. There are less than 800 residents remaining in the town that at its heyday had over 20,000 residents. My mother-in-law lived in that area and her father worked in the mines. She said that on Saturday evenings the sidewalks and streets were so crowded that you could not push a stroller down them.

My grandfather worked in the mines in Picher/Miami/Commerece area. My husband's uncle owned a mine on the outskirts of Baxter Springs, Kansas. The area is part of our family's heritage. As a child my mom would walk down the railroads and pick up hunks of lead and zinc that had fallen off the railcars. My grandparents had huge plates of pink dolomite lining their flowerbeds. I've even seen large crystals of calcite built into walls of homes. My husband used to go swimming in the strip pits that had filled with ground water. I was lucky enough to collect in the Swally mine when I was a teenager. I got to ride the bucket down into and then again out of the mine. The mine was almost completely water filled by then but I did manage to chip a small sphalerite encrusted plate out of the wall. If only I had been allowed to go collecting sooner!

Yesterday I read an article online telling how the town residents were saying goodbye to the town with a potluck dinner and a parade. Then last night my father called to tell me the town was wiped out by a tornado. He said the local news was calling for people with open pickups to come help carry the injured to hospitals.

Seems as if spring storms hastened the town's destruction and closure.

Hi Denise,

I've loved Tri-State minerals since I was a kid and have had a fascination with the area for a long time. I picked up a collection in Michigan last March and had to drive it back to Phoenix. My wife and I stopped in Joplin to visit the Mineral Museum and then we HAD to take a detour through Galena, KS and down into Picher. It was easy to imagine the streets bustling with cars and families, all making a good living on miner's wages. I loved the area and still have a deep affection for the area and its minerals.
The collection that I bought in Michigan was rich in Tri-State stuff and the previous owners had collected underground in Picher and told me great stories of their trip. It is a shame that there isn't a tourist mine in the area highlighting the area's mining heritage of which KS, MO and OK can all be justly proud. I will always love Tri-State pieces and, call me crazy, but the Tri-State mineral display at this year's unbelievable Tucson Show was my personal favorite!
Thanks for the info!

Dana, I was in the area for a family funeral in March and visited the Museum in Baxter Springs. They told me they had just been given the materials from the Picher Museum. They had moved more than 150 boxes of material from attics in Picher. Its a good thing that those were removed or they surely would have been lost in the tornado. The material will be archived and at some point digitized at the college in Pittsburg, Kansas.

I grieve for my friends and family who have lost loved ones and homes in this horrible devastation.

It is a horrible tragedy and it always seems that those that can least afford to lose their homes and livelihoods are the most affected. When we traveled through the region last March I was struck by the number of trees that were sheared off near the top--it was plainly evident that some major storm had hit a huge area.
My thoughts are also with the people who have been displaced or lost family and loved ones. I've never known tragedy like this and it must be difficult to deal with the loss due to such inhuman circumstances.

Not to take away anything from Picher, Dana, but has anyone scoped out the Myanmar disaster too??
The death toll alone exceeds by at least a factor of 2, that of the Tsunami, which got far more coverage...the world's weather is wreaking havoc on human lives as we sit in relative comfort...sometimes this is really hard to absorb and I pray that Mindat folk will dig into their pockets to donate to the relief funds for these two widely separated disasters.

Dana, the tree damage is from 2 years of severe ice storms. The first left folks for up to three weeks without electricity and did major damage to the trees. It was a pathetic sight. The next year 2 seperate ice storms hit the area again.

Nicole, our nephew jumped out of the vehicle he was in and got in a ditch when he saw the tornado bearing down on him, I am pleased to say he was not injured!

I found these images on the net and thought some of you might like to see what's left of the chat piles, etc.
