I've recently collected some goethite and hematite specimens from both Devil's Head and Lake George regions of Colorado. Some of them are associated with quartz crystals and many appear to be pseudomorphs after probably siderite although in one case the pseudomorph may be after an octahedral form of a different mineral (fluorite?).
Usually a long soak in water and brushing with a plastic toothbrush does a good job for some of the specimens. I have a lot more problems with the more hackly oxidized specimens and those associated with heavily iron stained quartz crystals. Any suggestions with cleaning those? Perhaps a quick and mild brushing with a more dilute mix of super iron out with frequent rinsing in plain water?
One specimen I plan on leaving alone looks like a cast where a quartz crystal used to be and the inner surface has a lovely etched look crystal pattern somewhat like those acid treated meteorite slices or perhaps a galvanized zinc spangle pattern.
