HI Gang,
I just returned from a KY fluorite dig and was wondering what I could use to get smithsonite and very very minor quartz coatings off fluorite. I would much rather stay away from HF in any quanity other than Whink. I've read here in past cleaning threads that Whink will work for the minor quartz coatings so I'll try that. Can you give me any ideas as to how to remove the smithsonite and not damage the fluorite? Please note; there are also galena xls on some pieces I would rather leave unscathed. I have SIO, citric, and HCL available and have used all of them before. Also, when removing unwanted calcites with acids do I have to worry about the galena? Jesse?

thanks for responding!!

Everett
Smithsonite is zinc carbonate and should dissolve easily in HCl. This will not remove the quartz though...
