Improving Mindat.orgNew options on locality edit page

29th Jan 2014 23:21 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Two new options have appeared on locality edit pages:

Other (historical) names:

area:

Neither of these are fully wired into the rest of the system yet, but you can start putting information in.

Howdy Jolyon,

I'm guessing the 'Other (historical) names:' option is going to be used to remove the alternate names currently in parenthesis.

Hi,

Any chance of ditching a pet irritation of mine with the Cumbrian localities? Namely the North and Western Region etc.. Presumably these are based on the 4 OS sheets for the Lake District which are simply not used as locality terms in England (I just did a search for the Lake District, UK & got no results!).

Cheers, Andy

Pertinent to this is the question of new names (in addition to historic names). I recently traveled through western Nevada, visiting the huge magnesia mine at Gabbs, Nevada. Driving past the entrance, one can readily see the sign out front indicating it is now the “Sierra Magnesite Mine” (unfortunately I neglected to get a photo of that sign). This is Mindat loc. 3915, listed thus: “Premier Chemicals Mine (Gabbs Magnesite-Brucite Mine; Basic Refractories Mine; Basic Mine), Gabbs District, Nye Co., Nevada, USA.” So, it would seem that the label “Premier Chemicals Mine” needs to be added to the historic or “other” names in parentheses, and “Sierra Magnesite Mine” inserted as the principal name. Or, maybe we should keep the common, well-used (it is really?–just wondering) “Premier Chemicals Mine” name as the principal name, and add “Sierra Magnesite Mine” to the group in parentheses as if it is an historic name. I bring it up for the issue to consider, as well as to point out that this one, specifically, needs attention.

This is a common problem that will come up again and again as ownership changes. Maybe what is needed is for the system to automatically move the current name to the historical slot when a new name is entered in the current name. This of course requires a slot called "Current Name" as opposed to "Other (historical) names". In Ontario there are "Areas" which are the equivalent of "Townships" in other parts of the province and are official names. I assume " area" relates to a location such as a town or lake etc. rather than an official geographic "Area"?

Trouble is you cannot search on Other (historical) names. In other words a locality search on a historic name does not find it if it is not currently in parenthesis in brackets in the title.

I am sure Jolyon will take care of that.

There's something wrong with the loc density values on the statistics page. The more localities you add, the smaller the values. Take Nauru for example: 21 km2 and one locality in the database. That should make ca. 1/50 locs per 1000 km2, but the list displays 21,000 !
