Field CollectingN. CA. Help

2nd Jan 2015 19:08 UTCH

All,

I used to pick up quartz rocks off an old property in Newcastle my parents used to own back when I was a kid. I would crack them open and find crystals. Well now I'm a dad and my son really wants to go out hunting for quartz crystals. Since my parents no longer own the property I don't have access to it any more. My nine-year old son and I are looking for an easy day trip to pick up some rocks or crystals. Can anybody direct me to some easy to access locations where it is legal to hunt? Up until today I had no idea one could actually find crystals in the ground, I always thought I would have to break open some rocks to get at them.

Any help provided will be much appreciated.

I believe your best bet would be to attend the next local rock/mineral club meeting in your area and ask. You may even find out that there is a whole lot more than just quartz crystals to hunt around you. :-)

Thank you Paul, I appreciate the suggestion.

What part of N. CA are You in and how far do You want to travel?

Tony is an awesome guy and knows his stuff. If you can get with him I am sure your son will find something cool! Tony took me out to my 1st rockhound trip.

Give us more info on what part of California you are in and we might be able to help. I am taking my 8 year old tomorrow gold prospecting and using the new high banker! !

Tony and Jason,

We live in Sacramento. We're actually planning on heading out to Auburn tomorrow and hike along the north fork of the American. I was thinking we might have a good chance of finding some quartz in that area.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks again for your help in advance.

Hey H,

I am in the Georgetown area. If You are planning on hiking along the river there are some interesting rocks , but You are not likely to find any crystals.

If You would like to look for some small Quartz crystals I would be willing to guide You (and son) to a place or two where Your chances would be somewhat better than searching river cobble.

In the Sacdemento area there are several mineral societies.

Wow Tony, that is very generous of you to offer that up, thank you so very much. But today is a family outing, both my wife and our daughter will be coming along so we kind of have to tailor our trip to everybody. This way my son and I get to look for "cool" rocks along the river and my daughter and wife get to do their hiking with our deranged boxer.

Hey H,

Did You find anything on Your trip.

My offer is an open invitation- just give Me some lead time to make sure that I have the time available.

Hey Tony,

Headed out Sunday to do some rockhounding! woot! btw i do want to thank you again for the smokey cluster! I cleaned it up and it is now displayd in my new wooden display case in the living room. Let me know when you want to go out again. Been itchin to get back out to the mountains, but as for this weekend, i am going to try to find a few more pieces of Druzy Quartz and Cinnabar Specimen for a friend.

H: i am way late replying. American River has cool rocks in general. I do a lot of Gold prospecting on that river as well. My best day on the American was 2 hours of crevising and coming out with 3 grams. I doubt i will ever get that lucky again haha!

Do you have any recommendations for the Del Norte county area? I moved to Crescent City a couple years back from southern california and the rockhound bug has recently bit me pretty hard. I've been doing my research on the geology and old mines around here and plan to start scouting some of those out sooner than later. But best as I can tell the area seems mostly unexplored and I have yet to find anything akin to a Crescent City Mineral Society :P

Sean

Have you checked for California Gem and Mineral Clubs here?

I had not, thanks for the link. Seems the closest one is in Eureka, I will have to check it out when I have the time and can make a day of it.
