Any good places to go mineral collecting in Georgia?

22nd Feb 2017 16:44 UTCRichard McConatha

Antonio,

Although I confess I have not been yet, there are at least two open-pit mines in Georgia that are open to collectors. The first is Hogg Mine, which is located near LaGrange, Georgia. I think it is noted for it's quartz crystals and tourmaline crystals.

The name of the second mine escapes me, but if you Google "Georgia fee mining" I am sure you will get several hits.

There is a recent book that could be of interest: "Minerals of Georgia" by Robert B. Cook and Julian C Gray (2016; The University of Georgia Press). Its pages are filled with color photos, and the text covers the geologic regions of Georgia and typical minerals found in those regions. That's followed by an alphabetic listing of all the minerals, where they are found and descriptions of the particular habits, colors etc. It is indexed by county, locality and mineral names. This book could give you an idea of where to begin researching localities with minerals of interest to you.

This book is an update of the one Dr. Cook wrote years ago. Note that most locations in Georgia are on private property; for those that are still open to collecting you need to be a member of a club. Also, many of the "good" locations are no longer available. For example, the famous Hackney farm staurolite location is now a subdivision. As always, these types of publications are not really guides to collecting locations, but rather references for studying existing specimens.

Graves Mountain is still open and contains numerous minerals such as rutile, kyanite, pyrite, iridescent hematite, and many others.

Hi Antonio

I agree with Fred. You need to research the area. Minerals of Georgia by Cook and Gray is a good start to your research.

Armed with that you can contact local clubs and the like to determine if any areas are open for collecting.

Cheers

I won't post the cliche response to contact a club as there are several well-known localities for excellent mineral collecting in the state that a little Internet research will surely lead you to, both fee and free. There are lots of amethyst and a few corundum localities in N. Georgia, but an Internet forum question won't get you to them, research and legwork will. My two cents.
