Does anyone know if the Amherst, Virginia amethyst location, the Schaar farm, is still open for collecting?

I called the Schaars and they said the farm had been sold. Any leads?

Nope, not open. Are you only interested in that property to collect from?

I can always find amethyst at Morefield Mine in Amelia. I have some very unique specimens. Problem is, Morefield Mine is being closed to the public after May 31 pending sale. I'll probably be there this Saturday to get in one more dig. Who knows if the new owners will allow it to be open to the public.

Umm Morefield doesnt produce Amethyst. I worked there for 5 Years before Sam bought it. All that stuff is salted.

Wayne is right! I also worked there one summer before Sam bought it and can also say the same thing. Check on mindats list of minerals found there to verify.
Wayne-did you ever facet that prehnite I gave to you from Bull Run while we were at Rutherford years ago? Brander

Can also confirm the salting of amethyst crystals. I was there a couple of years ago and Sam said he salted the mine dump with amethyst to entice the younger school kids and also provide them something pretty that is easily found. I did read that there was some native amethyst that came out of the Rutherford Mine in the same pegmatite region but not the Morefield.

Hey Wayne,

Feel free to add comments to my blog about Virginia amethyst with the other sites you know of. I would like to see this expanded to as accurate as possible for anyone wanting to collect amethyst now. Thanks again for the info!

Well I guess I shouldn't label them as from Morefield Mine then. I mainly go there for the amazonite anyways.

Yes I did Brander, but it was still a bit cloudy. I'm sry I haven't been around much in the last 10 years, but I was off to a foreign land for a bit doing consulting. But I'm back now and hit all my old holes. I ran into Stan the other day also at the Simpsons. Seems this Amethyst place is taking off. We have started to get what I think is close to Diamond Hill quality. Mike the Amozonite from there is great, so was the Elpasolite and other things. The facet grade garnets, Amethyst, opal, Astraited Quartz and Pyrite/ kyanite is all imported.

Wayne -

I talked to a couple of people who have dug at Simpsons and understand some nice pieces are being found. I'm swamped with things until after Memorial Day but would love to come down and collect some time in June. Is that something I can work out with you?

Hi Jeff,

Actually I have been to the Amherst location when the Schaar Farm was still allowing people to collect. I found some small crystals but nothing really good. I also looked for some at Amelia at the Rutherford Mine many years ago with little luck. I have found that quality amethyst from Virginia is quite rare. I really like quartz specimens so I have many amethyst from around the world. The one I have pictured from Rob Lavinsky in my blog is one of the best Virginia amethyst I have ever seen.

No there is no hope, they are closing down, they have spoken with their attorney and they own all the mineral rights and no digging and no trespassing signs are now posted looks like theres nothing we can do.

Well the effort in trying to save a locality was appreciated, so thanks to all who made an attempt. Any idea what happened?

^Who me? I've been going to this place for ages almost 15 years and they still turned me away, I did'nt even know it was closing until I got there, don't think for a second I went over there begging them to reopen the place. I just know that something sudden had to come up for this to happen thats all cause there very nice people and it was such a great site. Oh well...
