is anyone interested in learning how to identify these? If so I had written some in depth articles years ago (actually i was the one who exposed the fraud on ebay) regarding man-made nuggets. I have all the correspondance from me to ebay and back, and then tips and tricks on identifying the man-made stuff. if anyones interested I will repost them on my site (they are off right now, since my sites being redone). I would post the articles here but they are heavily picture laden and it wouldnt be easy to redo here.

Maybe i should post pictures of 2 nuggets and have you guys answer a poll as to shich is genuine and which is fake?

I would like to know. Some years back, I was scammed by fake "Nevada silver crystals" and do not wish to repeat that experience with gold.

let me guess copper nuggets, sculptured copper. painted gold or electroplated then coated in something to make them less shiny seen these in stores years ago sold as replicas have they decided to sell them as real?

Donald, there have also been cases of fake nuggets made with real gold (presumably cast in a mold made from a real nugget?), to take advantage of the specimen premium over bullion value. I've been told these can be detected by chemical analysis of a cross section, since real nuggets are relatively depleted of silver on the surface. A lot of work, and damaging to the specimen, and doesn't exclude the possibility that fake nuggets could be artificially Ag-depleted on the surface.
Cheers,
Alfredo

interesting, then I would look for seams or places that have been filed smooth after the casting process as well as similarity to other pieces in the same lot if being sold from a lot, if not look online for pictures of other known fakes to see if they had been cast in the same mold.
