Techniques for CollectorsLooking for lapidary

8th Jul 2014 01:59 UTCCraig Oliveira

hello, i'm looking for a local lapidary (gem cutter) to facet some rough's that I have.. I've been having little to no luck. I live near Sacramento and will drive 3 hours or so if the person is good.

Also, is there a standard pay rate depending on type of cut? I have some Oregon Sunstones i wanted to get cut for my better half … so any tips on a gem cutter or on How much i might expect to pay would great…!!

Thanks!!

Craig,

The closest I could find was the Gem Cutters Guild in Oregon. It is possible that a member lives closer. Can't hurt to contact them. Maybe they know of someone who lives close to you (past member who moved). Also try the mineral clubs near you for a cutter. Some folks with enough material to make it worthwhile send their goods to Bangkok. On the east coast I usually get about $150.00 per stone on special orders of single items.

Hope this helps,

Gary

Thanks Gary, yes it does help. I'm heading to Oregon Thursday and hopefully they know somebody closer. I tried my local club but it's pretty thin on advanced members but gonna ask around at other clubs close to me.

Thanks again
