Jewelers!!!
April 05, 2008 10:56AM
I wanted to know if there is any jewelers in the house? I'd like to make a topic where anyone who would like to talk about jewelry making can talk about it here. In a few weeks i'll be starting my jewelry program. Does anyone have any advice for beginners in the goldsmithing/jewelry trade? If anyone is a jeweler and wants to give advice for this topic please let me know, thanks! smiling smiley

Aaron, Yes, I am a jeweler as well as my other business with full engagement in Brazil and Asia.

I am eighty miles away from Chicago and almost all my work are being done by a professional team of six people --. Where in the use of UPS -- within eighty miles the goods gets there the next day -- and my turnaround time for repair and all are just about three to five working day.

For a beginner in a globa climate -- just remember that most goods from around the world can be at your place in three to five days.

Where I have commission stones to be cut in Brazil ship to Asia -- where the setting and images have been done in the US and download over there ---- The stones are to be cut or fitted -- and back to me in about ten to 14 working days smiling smiley

So, think global, think of logistics -- Hell, every now and then, yes, buy via the many catalog houses like Stuller, like Rio Grand and all -- and when time permits I can have other goods to help lower my cost from all over.

Welcome to the global world of gems and jewelry smiling smiley stay local when you can and go global when you have to smiling smiley

Fair enough ? smiling smiley

Hey, Paul!

Thank you for responding. That sounds fair enough. Hey what do you think about this... I am told by my instructor to think about where I'd like to set up my store after I'm finished. He thinks it's best to set one up in a small town with only 1-2 jewelers foregoing the larger cities initially due to the constant competition. What would you say for a new jeweler like myself on this issue? I certainly have heard of "Stuller" and "Rio Grand." My instructor will be letting me order tools from his account. Hopefully I will get some discounts. Instructor, Rob, says he'll have me done by next April or May. I am so enthused I will be an artist! If you have anymore advice Paul when it comes to jewelry, please let me know. Also, would you happen to have a website for your store? I'd like to come and visit your store sometime and just look around. I live close to Chicago. Anyways... Have a great day!

Nothing to dampen that amazing enthusiasm Aaron, but when you are finished, you will be an artistic technician..the artist comes along after you are thoroughly at ease with your craft and your media. If you love making beautiful things, then this is definitely the place to be working. I decided long ago, that I would provide the creative grease and put my ideas into the hands of artistic experts, like you may become, who then translate them into three dimensional things of beauty.

Having your own shop is difficult, but very rewarding. Most important of all is to show your work to as many people as you can, so that you can start building a base of clientelle that appreciate both YOU and your WORKS. Once you have the knowledge about metals and in particular , stones, it is good to help educate your clientelle too, so that they can make informed decisions about these most expensive and special stones and pieces of jewellery.

If you keep close tabs on them, their birthdays, anniversaries and special dates... phone and/or send cards.....over time they will remember to include you in the celebration of those special dates as the person that memorializes them with your special creations. [I have even had the glorious chances, twice now, to be a part of the actual moment of being engaged ...even photographed one of them for the participants.]
Now that was really exciting seeing the look in her eyes when she saw his creation made just for her. You should look forward with much excitement, Aaron, as this is one of the most rewarding creative careers out there.

Thank you Ray! I am certainly excited about my trade starting up. I appreciate all that you said. It makes me feel good to be encouraged by other jewelers that have been in the field for a while. I wonder how people go on to making jewelry for people who are celebrities. I've heard of many out there but I think it'd be very awesome to do that for someone famous!

Would you have any other tips that I should keep in mind while I'm in training? I.E. How I should think while being trained, Things I should know before my training?
