Amethyst Cathedral value

Hello,

I am looking for thoes wise and well experienced in your field of gems and minnerals. I am in dire need of your graceous help.

I am the former owner of a metaphysical gift store that had to be closed for various reasons primarily because of the economic conditions and an exteamly lopsided LLC arangement - money person(me)/sweat equity partners. The majority of the items in the store wihich I purchased not knowing much about were crystals, crystal balls and geodes. I have the inventory on consignment in another similar store now but would like to move the merchandise a bit more quickly for help with the large debts I have been left with.

The Cathedral stands a bit over 6ft tall and weights somewhere between 300 and 400 lbs. The estimated value I was given by the previous owner of the store I bought was between $3,000 and $4,000.

If any of you might be able to give me an idea of what you think the value of this lovely piece would be or would like to purchase it or any of my inventory for a reasonable amount I would love to talk with you soon.

Please call me at 208-755-0527 I am better at getting phone calls rather than emails if possible.

Sincerely, Shirley Blackwell

The valuation you were quoted seems quite accurate, so you were not cheated. I've seen somewhat smaller ones sell for $3,500 wholesale. Of course, if you are in a hurry, you might end up with less.

However, this website is inhabited mainly by mineral collectors, and amethyst cathedrals are not the type of thing they normally purchase, so you're not likely to get a tremendous amount of encouragement here. The interior decorator market, or metaphysical market would be better bets. Good Luck.

Your amethyst geode was produced from the amethyst mines near the little town of Amatista Sur in the Brazilain state of Rio Grande do Sul. Typically we buy geodes like yours for $4 to $8 per kg in large lots. We sell them for about the same amount per pound. If you geode weighs 300 pounds we would offer it for sale for about $1500. I think if you want to sell it quickly you may have to sell it for less than that. Each year more than a megaton of similar specimens are exported for sale around the world. (megaton=1000tons)

Rock, I think you meant to say a megakilo. The prefix mega is equal to 10^6, i.e. one million. Assuming you are referring to metric tons then 1 megakilo would equal 1000 tons. A megaton however equals 10^9 kilos, or a billion kilograms of material.

Barry,
Yes, you are right. I think I should have said kiloton or 1000 tons. At any rate more than 50 of the big 40 foot sea containers. Actually they ship out a lot more than that in similar and related agate, quartz and amethyst products.
