various minerals I.D. and worth?
February 22, 2012 03:05PM
Hello again,

I have recently inherited a large mineral/gem/fossil collection as I plan to keep most of it I keep finding rid bits here and there. I have found these in particular in a container not labeled. I would just like to see if these are worth keeping or just giving away.

It looks like some fairly decent grade lapidary material. Worth keeping if you are interested in cutting cabochons.

Here is a bit of help on the IDs, it's hard to see them all clearly but this is a start.

First photo:

top right 2 large slabs, crazy lace agate
2nd row 1st left is tiger eye, the greensih one beside possibly chrysoprase, fuchsite or variscite, can't really make it out
2nd row last piece could be Biggs Jasper or just wonderstone
3rd row large banded red piece is tiger iron - this is different than tiger eye
last row - pink banded cabachon is rhodochrosite

2nd photo much the same as the first, hard to tell if the blue ones are lazurite or sodalite
top right is Owyhee Jasper
big banded piece could be Biggs or wonderstone, likely the latter

3rd photo
top left, turitella agate
blues - definitely some sodalite there
bottom row left - greenish blue stone is amazonite, the piece with the pink in the centre could be tugtupite or rhodonite.
If it is tugtupite it should fluoresce, and it would be worth more than most of the others.

They may be worth about $100.

Third photo, upper middle looks like it could be zinc ore from Franklin, NJ (franklinite, willemite, calcite, zincite). Check for fluorescence (red and green, strongest under SW UV). Not that valuable (~$15?), but could be sold to a fluorescent mineral collector. If it's not fluorescent, could be just granite...

To the right of this might be petrified wood from Arizona, but could also be something else.

And lower middle, with the pink/red, could also be limestone, dolomite, or chalcedony included with cinnabar. (Try searching for photos of "myrickite").
