mine names vs locations

I have noticed that some of the mines I visit, I know as one name but on Mindat they are labeled a different name. For example; I know a mine listed on the map of the Gold Hill District as the Rustler mine, but on the map on the Gold Hill District, it is labeled the Reaper mine. There is Rustler mine but it is not the same.

There are several like this in the Gold Hill area + I have noticed it at other locations.

Could this be a issue with the mines changing names with new ownership?

It is possible that I do know the mines as the wrong name on some of them but others I have the topo that shows them wrong per Mindat.

Do I add the pictures of the mines to the names I know them as, which is not the same as on Mindat? Or do I go by what Mindat has them labeled as currently?

Howdy Rick,

Many of these cases are most likely a single site with multiple names, due to changes in ownership over the years.
To complicate the issue, quite often locals in an area, have names for sites which are never official names.
A classic here in South Australia is the 'Wiperaminga Hill (McMahon's Pegmatite; McMahon Quarry), Kalabity homestead area, Olary Province'. The name 'McMahon was only ever a local name used by collectors and locals; it was named after the company mining at the time, however the only official name was only ever 'Wiperaminga Hill'.
Chances are you have either have names from the many used over the years, or just a local one. I would suggest you do a little bit of research before making a new listing on here. I'm sure there should be some with knowledge of the area that can help out.

Cheers Mark.

We will never have all the answers, only more questions!

One of the big ones for us in the Franklin, NJ, area is the mine at Ogdensburg. Almost everyone calls it the "Sterling Hill Mine." In fact, it was officially the "Sterling Mine" per the owners (New Jersey Zinc Co.), albeit located on Sterling Hill.
