GeneralWhat is the difference between wustite and wustite (with German u)

25th Sep 2014 03:22 UTCBo Sundman

I have seen the use of both wustite and wustite (with German u with trema) for both the mineral and the phase (Fe_(1-x)O) so I wonder which is the correct? I understand it is named after Wust (with German u with trema) so I assume the use of the wustite is due to the lack of the dots on the computer keyboard?

But often there are strong feelings about names so I would like to be certain.

A German ü gives a connotation of charactery Y

I have not the ü on my keyboard, but fix it wit these dots ¨ and u

Hello Bo and Ulf

You can use Alt-codes. Press Alt and type 129 (with number lock on) and you´ll get ü. See: http://www.theworldofstuff.com/characters/

Microsoft Word 2007 has that symbol in their symbols directory.

Hi All,

German ü you can write ue. E. g. Wüstite = Wuestite, Müller = Mueller, München = Muenchen. ue instead of ü is often found in email adresses, urls e.c.t.

Greetings from Goslar, a town, once visited by Goethe.

Thank you all for the help, I am convinced there should be a German u with trema (or umlaut). However I have found several sites where it is spelled with a simple u without trema, for example

http://webmineral.com/data/Wustite.shtml#.VCYRClf-vIU

even if they must be able to generate a German u with trema. So I became uncertain

The IMA mineral list at http://pubsites.uws.edu.au/ima-cnmnc/imalist.htm has it in the correct form with ü. It is a good list to check and also for copy/paste actions. I think it is just lazyness which prevents the use of the more strange characters like in Långbanite, Metalodèvite, Nežilovite as there should be no modern computer out there without at least one unicode font.

Cheers,

Stefan Örtel (with umlaut! :-))

Great reference, Rock! Thanks.

Remember that if you are not using the proper character, you are misspelling the mineral name. Mindat has the proper spelling and characters for all the mineral species, as well as the IMA list.
