GeneralDual listing of the Potosi and El Potosi Mine

2nd Jun 2016 18:30 UTCAlfred L. Ostrander

In the locality listings on Mindat the Potosi and El Potosi mines are listed separately. In the first listing (Potosi) it is noted that "Panczner is wrong". It is said that Panczner listed the Potosi and El Potosi as separate locations. I just checked all the cited page numbers in both mine listings and could not find justification for claiming Panczner was wrong. I also read the locality chapter regarding Santa Eulalia and could find no clear reason for the "wrong" claim. So please help me out if you can. Can you cite the actual claim from Minerals of Mexico or any other source that this claim was made. Checking all the locations cited, all I found was the oft repeated El Potosi location. Yes, it was about a two cup of coffee job checking all the citations. Did I miss one, particularly the errant Potosi ?

I also considered the captions of the two photos on page 11. The photos are both captioned "El Potosi Mine-Santo Domingo #5 Shaft". A map on page 13 shows the Potosi No 1 shaft and the Santo Domingo No 5 Shaft. These shafts appear to be about 300 meters apart. I hope the captions did not lead to the confusion as the map also shows 2 other shafts for the El Potosi Mine. Also, The El Potosi Mining Company was very active in the district.

To the point, was Panczer wrong or misquoted/misunderstood and should the two localities be merged?

Best Regards,

Al O

Alfred,

I couldn't find evidence that Panczer indicated that they are two localities.

The mine was long mined by the El Potosi Mining Company and there are several principal shafts (perhaps 5 ?) at the site.

The Mine leases appear to have been taken over by a Canadian company (Cyprium Mining) and they have apparently rehabilitated the No. 3 shaft in 2016.

That company seems to refer to the mine as Potosi Silver Mine.

I would merge them under: Potosi silver Mine (El Potosi Mine; Potosi mine) etc

I also believe that "Francisco Portillo" is incorrect as part of the locality string.

I also think that Shaft 5 should be shown under the Potosi Silver Mine

Cheers

Keith,

Thank you for responding. I think you are right about Cyprium. Sometimes keeping track of properties changing hands is difficult.

Maybe I should have posted this under corrections, etc. I hope an administrator checks this out and edits the existing listings.

Thanks Keith,

Al O

I also have been confused by the two locality strings that both contain a listing for the Potosi Mine. The string on the left is differentiated by the name (Aquiles Serdan) and the string on the right is differentiated by the name (Francisco Portillo).

Researching these names reveals that (Aquiles Serdan) is a municipality with a seat at Santa Eulalia. It is a large land division in Mexico that covers an area of 651 square km. (Francisco Portillo) is a village with a zip code that is located in the mountains to the north east of Santa Eulalia and appears to be the center of much mining activity.

If it is determined that there is really only one Potosi Mine the following is a suggested locality string that combines the two current strings and avoids the confusion. This would require combining all of the photos from the Potosi Mine under one heading.

Note: It is probably not necessary to mention Mun. de Aquiles Serdán and Aquiles Serdán both in the string.

Chihuahua

.....Mun. de Aquiles Serdán

..........Santa Eulalia District

...............West Camp

....................Aquiles Serdán

.........................Francisco Portillo

..............................Animas Mine

..............................Buena Tierra Mine

..............................Cocineras Mine

............................. Condesa Mine

..............................Inglaterra Mine

..............................La Purísima Mine

..............................Parcionera Mine

..............................Potosí Mine (El Potosí Mine)

..............................Santa Rita Mine

..............................Santo Domingo Mine

..............................Velardeña Mine

..............................Vieja Mine

..............................Minerales Shaft 5

The only thing left is to find a place for the Carmen Mine.

I would recommend the following two further changes to your list

Chihuahua

.....Mun. de Aquiles Serdán

..........Santa Eulalia District

...............West Camp

.........................Francisco Portillo

..............................Animas Mine

..............................Buena Tierra Mine

..............................Cocineras Mine

............................. Condesa Mine

..............................Inglaterra Mine

..............................La Purísima Mine

..............................Parcionera Mine

..............................Potosí Mine (El Potosí Mine)

........................................Shaft 1 (Minerales Shaft 1)

........................................Shaft 2 (Minerales Shaft 2)

.........................................Shaft 3 (Minerales Shaft 3)

.........................................Shaft 4 (Minerales Shaft 4)

........................................Shaft 5 (Minerales Shaft 5)

..............................Santa Rita Mine

..............................Santo Domingo Mine

..............................Velardeña Mine

..............................Vieja Mine

Provided of course that the 2nd Aquiles Cerdan is not a town - if it is then I would suggest keep it and remove Francisco Portillo.

The Inglaterra looks to be part of the Potosi Mine as does the Santo Domingo

I don't know about poor old Carmen !

Keith,

Here is a link describing Francisco Portillos as a City / Region in Chihuahua. Suffice it to say dealing with Mexican locations can be difficult. I was hoping that a Mexican expert would help us out with this.

Here is another link that describes Aquiles Serdán as a city in Mexico. There are 32 of them, one is in Chihuahua near Santa Eulalia.

I give up!

Hi Larry

And I don't believe it should be in the local - not close enough

I agree Keith, see my edit above.

I still hope that we get some other view point on this subject.

Some of the discrepancies in names are due to the fact that in the mid1980's the Mexican government changed several names in the area.

The Santa Eulalia mining district is in the municipio of Aquiles Serdan. In Spanish, Municipio de Aquiles Serdan

The town of Santa Eulalia is now named Aquiles Serdan.

The mining camp of Santo Domingo was renamed Francisco Portillo

For historical purposes it would seem prudent to note these changes to help keeping up with old labels prior to the mid 1980's or for labels that continued on with the old names.

Line three, Aquiles Serdan district (Santa Eulalia district) should probably read Santa Eulalia mining district.

11th Jun 2016 13:19 UTCLarry Maltby Expert

Keith,

The reference that you provided above is very enlightening. It is clear that there is only one Potosi Silver Mine consisting of at least five shafts located in the West Camp of the Santa Eulalia Mining District. The name changes that Alfred mentioned also have cleared up much of the confusion in my old and somewhat slow working mind. The reference also supports Alfred’s point that the name “Santa Eulalia Mining District” is still in use by Mexican mining companies in spite of the name changes. A straight line location string for the Potosi Silver Mine alone would now look like this:

Chihuahua

.....Mun. de Aquiles Serdán

.......... Santa Eulalia district

...............West Camp

.........................Francisco Portillo (Santo Domingo)

..............................Potosí Mine (El Potosí Mine)

....................................... Shaft 1 (Minerales Shaft 1)

....................................... Shaft 2 (Minerales Shaft 2)

....................................... Shaft 3 (Minerales Shaft 3)

....................................... Shaft 4 (Minerales Shaft 4)

....................................... Shaft 5 (Minerales Shaft 5)

To go beyond this would require a great deal of research (which you may have already done). This is just to say that I have not taken the time to confirm the other entries. It does seem clear to me that Mindat should have only one entry for the Potosi Silver Mine and all of the photos should be shown under that single heading. However, this looks like a lot of work for some manager.
