Previous Collection Forum/Thread
July 08, 2006 01:09AM
I would like to propose a forum or thread that covers "previous collection" labels and/or collectors. There is currently information on the web that covers the more famous collector and his/her label (e.g., Arthur Russell, Bement, Roebling etc) - for example the Mineral record colelction archive, but there is often little information regarding the more obscure, less famous or contemporary collector. Often dealers are less than willing, unable or are asked not to provide more information about a particular collector whose specimens they are now selling. I would really like to learn more about the collectors whose specimens now reside in my collection.

Thanks,
Ian

Ian,
This is a welcome idea; many of the specimens in my collection and also ones that I do sell come with obscure labels and some with quite obvious old labels. I note that "The Mineralogical Record" at present is collating a series of old labels. When I do sell or trade some mineral specimens I often am now finding that the potential buyer etc, is looking for the items label or labels; often this adds value to the specimen in monetary terms or asthetic terms for the true collector, as we would all like to know the provenance of what we have in our collection.

Hi

I agree with Ian and Neil !!! It would be nice if there was a forum for mineral labels/collectors. I even see it broader and wanna bring in hystorical data concerning minerals ,collections , museums and mines in here. Like Ian said already , labels can bring lots of information that we , the collectors ,have to cultivate ,just like we manage our collections!!.
The Mineralogical Record already does it for the top and famous collectors , mindat could be a welcome addition to the Record!

hoping to hear more about this topic !!
