Hello all,

November 14 & 15, 2009 are the dates of the New Mexico Mineral Symposium at the Macy Center on the campus of the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology in Socorro, New Mexico. There will be 12 presenters in mineralogy/geology concurrent with 4 presenters from the Mining Artifact Collectors Association (these last talks will be Saturday afternoon in the Galena Room at the Macy Center).

On Friday afternoon/evening an informal "tailgating" and social hour(s) will take place at the Comfort Inn & Suites in individual rooms - the address is 1259 Frontage Road, NW.

Featured speaker this year will be Ray DeMark, one of the principles of the Symposium from it's inception 30 years ago.

Google New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources for more info.

I haven't been to the Symposium since 2000, but this year I am making the 13 hour drive to Socorro for the Symposium and am really looking forward to seeing everyone there....

Do they publish the presentations and papers that are given at the Symposium? I'd like to get a copy if possible. Can't make it this year, but it's on my "to do" list. I've got the Detroit Show this weekend, the Cleveland Micromineral Symposium in early November and the Canadian Micromounter's one-dayer the next weekend.

They publish abstracts of the talks in New Mexico Geology. Most of these are available at their website.

Hi Don,

Hope to see you at the symposium. Just wondered if any other MinDaters will be attending this weekend?

Are the papers, proceedings or presentations published anywhere for those who cannot attend?

Thanks!

Yes, but it takes a year for them to show up in the Journal. And they're abstracts, not the complete papers. At least, that's how it appears to me.

Steve

Steve, the abstracts are the ONLY published evrsions of the presentations unless you contact the presenter for a POSSIBLE complete written presentation. It's been my experience that the abstracts are in the next issue of New Mexico Geology after the Symposium. There is a printout of the abstracts in the folder attendees recieve at registration......maybe you could ask for one of these at the website. I really don't know if the abstracts are published on the website but I'd be willing to bet they are.

Don,

I went back to [geoinfo.nmt.edu] and checked again. The 2008 abstracts were published in Volume 30, No. 4. So I assume that the 2009 abstracts will be in Vol 31, No. 4. However, right now, the Vol 31 folder only contains No. 1. So it appears to take a few months or more for later issues to show up for download.

It would be nice if the Symposium had a current download of the 2009 abstracts available. Just a thought!

Steve
