Discrepancies in positions

Mines around Darwin Hills, Inyo Co California

I noticed some discrepancies as outlined below.

Alameda Mine, MAS ID 60271922 Deposit ID 10187973
[www.mindat.org]
Mindat position 36.2708333333 , -117.577222222
Correct position N36.27077 W117.57810 from my own tracklog and confirmed in Sat-map, as well as from USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]

Toga Mine (Pacific Tungsten Company Mine), Darwin, Darwin District, Inyo Co., California
[www.mindat.org]
Mindat position 36.2691666667 , -117.577222222
Correct position N36.26870 W117.57745 from my own tracklog and confirmed in Sat-map, as well as from USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]

Millspaugh prospect (Big 4 Iron Nos. 1-3; Millspaugh Iron deposit; Millspaugh deposit), Millspaugh, Argus Mts (Argus Range), Inyo Co.

Here I am somewhat confused, you bundle everything into one prospect, consequently you list only 1 Prospect.

But I found 2 separate ones:
Millspaugh, MAS ID 60270193 at N36.03702 W117.45133 (Commodity: Iron, surface
Status: Prospect) USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]

Big 4 Iron, MRDS ID M025016 at N36.05319 W117.45427 (Commodities: Iron, Gold, Copper and Silver, also Limonite, Pyrite
Status: Occurrence) USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]

The distance between the two is about 1 Mile

Christmas Gift Mine, Darwin, Darwin District, Inyo Co.

Mindat indicates no position for this mine.
There are 2 locations in USGS:
One is at N36.29888 W117.60949 ( I saw some faint remains there) and it is a former lead mine (MRDS ID W023742, deposit ID 10076619)

The other one is at : N36.30327 W117.59120 (same MRDS ID W023742 but different Deposit ID 10211798)

Darwin Antimony Mine, Darwin, Darwin District, Inyo Co., California, MAS ID 0060271927, Deposit ID 10212473
[www.mindat.org]

Mindat position 36.3055555556 , -117.622222222. off by 1.2 Miles
Correct position N36.31721 W117.60500 from my own tracklog and confirmed in Sat-map, as well as by “Collector’s Notes The Darwin Antimony Mine” by Walt Margerum see [www.mineralsocal.org] (NAD 27 à N 36° 19.037’ ; W 117° 36.249’) which confirms my location.
USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov] is slightly off; about 400 feet south

Defense Mine, Panamint Valley, Lookout District (Modoc District), Inyo Co., California,
[www.mindat.org]

There are actually 2 locations as per USGS

MRDS ID W023798 Deposit ID 10163617
Mindat position 36.2444444444 , -117.477777778. off by 0.9 Miles
Correct position N 36.244342 W117.461078 from my own tracklog and confirmed in Sat-map, as well as from USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]

MRDS ID W023798, Deposit ID10076654
At N 36.244637 W117.460368 from USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]

Kingman prospect (Kingman Mine), Darwin, Darwin District, Inyo Co.

Mindat position 36.2675 , -117.577777778. difference approx 500 feet
I would place it here: N36.24425 W117.46111 from my observations and confirmed in Sat-map

Lead Mine (Hughes Group; Hughes Mine), Inyo Co.
there are 2 “Lead Mines” in this area

One Lead Mine MRDS ID M024143
Mindat position 36.2527777778 , -117.428888889
USGS position N36.25275 W117.42979, [mrdata.usgs.gov]
I could not see anything at that position and I do not know which position is correct

Another Lead Mine MRDS ID W023760
USGS position N36.24857 W117.43560 [mrdata.usgs.gov]
I would place it here: N36.24564 W117.43464, but I have nothing to confirm it, except “Mine Cache” which puts it here : N36.2466 W117.4347 (300 feet to the north)

Lillie Mine (Mature Consolidated), Inyo Co., California,
[www.mindat.org]

Mindat position 35.8055555556 , -117.287222222
I believe what you show is the Lillie Prospect (MRDS ID M020036 Deposit ID 10139606)

But the real Lillie Mine (MRDS ID M020036 , deposit ID 10033473) is about here, 8.6 Miles south at: N35.92442 W117.33141
USGS [mrdata.usgs.gov]
at N35.92609 W117.33172 à 600 feet north of my position

Little Mack Mine, Inyo Co
[www.mindat.org]
there are 2 localities in USGS

Little Mack; MRDS ID M024144; Deposit ID 10139443 (Gold, underground, past producer)
at N36.23827 W117.42650 from USGS
I would put it at N 36.237570 W117.425936; 300 feet south of USGS
and
Little Mack Mine, MRDS ID M02414; Deposit ID 10103501 (Gold, Lead, small past producer)
at N36.23997 W117.42034 from USGS
Mindat position 36.24 , -117.419444444. is 265 feet east of the USGS-position

@Administrators
I have compiled a list of mines in the Darwin Hills, Inyo County, CA. Some of the locations are from my own tracklogs, but most of them are based on the latest info from the USGS Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS) from [mrdata.usgs.gov] and checked with sat images

If you wish I can mail you a copy of this list, it is in the GPX-format, but I would need an e-mail address to which I can send it as an e-mail attachment.

Regards

Richard

us
Richard,

I've noted your post. I have a printout of these new coordinates and other information. I hope to address them in the coming week.

Now that tax day is past and the Franklin, NJ, show is history I will have more time for Mindat and the California project. Thanks for your contributions.

Chet
