Improving Mindat.orgSouth Jackson not part of Cambria-Jackson

14th Sep 2014 02:10 UTCDan Fountain

http://www.mindat.org/loc-125026.html

The Cambria-Jackson Mine utilized the shafts of the old Hartford Mine to exploit ore bodies below the original workings of the Cambria Mine and a parcel formerly owned by the Jackson Iron Company (but not mined by the Jackson Mine) leased from the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. Bessemer was another name for the Lillie Mine, which was part of the Cambria-Jackson property but not mined by it. Lakeside property was part of the Hartford.

The South Jackson Mine is more than a mile away and was not worked or accessed by the Cambria-Jackson.

So, all but South Jackson should remain in the locality name.

Is "South Jackson" the same as the South Jackson pit?

14th Sep 2014 14:01 UTCDan Fountain

Yes it is. More properly termed the South Jackson Mine, as there were at least a couple of shafts as well as the large pit.

Have fixed this.

Lengthy explanation to follow.

Thanks Dan!

I only asked because there was already a South Jackson pit in the database, so it should have been an easy fix to remove South Jackson from the Cumbria. Not sure why there needs to be a lengthy explanation for such a simple fix, but ok.

Depends on how picky we want to get about localities...

The Cambria is a specific 40 acre parcel & had two shafts - should it be a locality?

The Lillie is the adjacent 40 to the west, and had it's own two shafts - a separate locality?

The Lakeside was a small "government lot" on the shore adjacent to the Hartford property. No sign of mining activity remains - the small pit filled in years ago, no rock piles left, nearly the whole parcel occupied by the highway. Not a locality?

The Hartford was a mine in its own right for years before its shafts were used to mine the Cambria-Jackson properties. Is it a locality?

There is no surface indication of mining activity on the Jackson part of the property, so is it a locality?

Who is to say what locality a specimen found near the Hartford shaft came from?

It's a simple fix, but raises a lot of questions. For that matter, should South Jackson and Jackson be separate localities? Same owner and operator, but different mineralogy. I don't believe they're connected underground...

Examples of why Mindat will never be "finished."
