Improving Mindat.orgIbitiara or Novo Horizonte?

19th Feb 2015 12:58 UTCVik Vanrusselt Expert

Hello all,

I've noticed that at the Ibitiara locality (http://www.mindat.org/loc-157035.html), there are a number of images of Hematite, Rutile and Rutilated Quartz.

When researching my specimen of Rutilated Quartz & Hematite a while ago, I received the following message from Luiz Alberto Menezes Filho:

"Ibitiara was until the mid 1990's a big county, but then it was split up and Novo Horizonte, which was previously a district of Ibitiara, became a county as well. All mines of Rutilated Quartz are now located in Novo Horizonte instead of Ibitiara."

Therefore, I think (most of) the images at Ibitiara should be assigned to the Novo Horizonte locality (http://www.mindat.org/loc-5387.html).

The information at Novo Horizonte states basically the same thing:

"Until the mid 1990's Ibitiara county was big and Remedios and Novo Horizonte were districts of Ibitiara; then there was a vote and Novo Horizonte was

split from Ibitiara and became a new county ("município"), and Remedios voted to join Novo Horizonte, so now the only county that produces rutilated

quartz and rutile on hematite is Novo Horizonte."
