Improving Mindat.orgMissing locality: "Tsararano, Sahatany Valley, Madagascar"

8th Nov 2015 18:01 UTCVik Vanrusselt Expert

Hello all,

Today, I received (from Zelimir Gabelica) a specimen of dark pink Fluor-Liddicoatite crystals on snow white massive Feldspar.

The locality on the label is

"Tsararano, Vallée de la Sahatany, Madagascar".

Wikipedia mentions that Tsararano is located in Maevatanana District, in Betsiboka Region (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsararano,_Maevatanana)

Mindat has an entry for the district here: http://www.mindat.org/loc-189184.html

Is anyone familiar with the geology in this district?

If so, is it likely that my specimen comes from this missing locality?

Thanks,

Vik

Not all placenames are found in Wikipedia..

Vallée de la Sahatany is Sahatany valley http://www.mindat.org/loc-29201.html. This area has produced many polychromatic tourmalines.

Tsararano ( Or Tsararano atsimo (Tsararano Sud) is the name of a small village on the N side of the Marososona ( a ridge) in the Sahatany pegmatite Field area. There was an anbandoned old tourmaline quarry here in the late 1990s. An inventory from 1964 lists only black tourmaline and muscovite. It may be the same locality or a new one nearby.

The locality was not entered in Mindat.

PS: Your specimen may be fluor-liddiocoatite (or other tourmaline species), but single xl XRD and WDS analysis are needed to confirm which species that are present in the crystal.

Thank you Knut Edvard, I will contact Mr Gabelica and get back to this when I find out more :-)
