Improving Mindat.orgFersmanite type locality and wrong descriptions under photos

27th Aug 2006 23:12 UTCPavel Kartashov Manager

Dear friends!

Type locality of fersmanite is vein #1 of Labuntsov, 3rd left tributary of Vuonnemijok river, Eveslogchorr Mt., Central Khibina, Kola, Russia.

See A.N. Labuntsov Fersmanite - new mineral from Khibina tundras, - DAN SSSR,1929, ser. A, p. 297-301.

And more detally in: A.N. Labuntsov Mineralogical survey of central parts of Khibina massif (zircon, catapleiite and fersmanite localities), - Khibinskie apatity, 1933, N6, p. 202-209.

Some tens meters to N Labuntsov #2 vein located also with fersmanite mineralization, but with different association type and with different appearance of it.

In fersmanite gallery two photos of Rob Lavinskii are presented: http://www.mindat.org/photo-18481.html and http://www.mindat.org/photo-20216.html

from my point of view, both photo were made from the same specimen. But they have different localities: Eveslogchorr Mt, Khibiny Massif, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia and Lake Buldym, Vishnevye Mts, Chelyabinsk Oblast', Urals Region, Russia. the last locality isn't fersmanite one, but fersmite.

This specimen not from type locality from the first sight, but jujing to fersmanite xl size, yes it is. But colours of the photo is absolutely wrong.

As usualy, Rob many wrote, but I can't translate his words (can't to make sensible translation). Which two specimens? Which Fersmans hoard?

I am not sure ever Fersman visit this locality. In this region Labuntsov and his crew had work only. And after his works (which produced ALL old fersmanite specimens) this locality was lost up to summer 1987, when it was rediscovered.

May be Rob wanted to say, that his specimen belong to these first collections of Labuntsov? If it is so, I must to disapoint him - this specimen is mined in the end of 80th from central ceolitized zone of pegmatite.

Now the locality is empty as tram (completely mined). In 1994 I can't to find any fersmanite grain during 2 hours. But found some broken xls in 1998, apparently they was produced by collectors from crushed big boulders. But in 1990 I had still picked from ground large granular fersmanite masses about kg weight - "fersmanitite" :)

Other phothos (of John H. Betts) all are from the type locality, but of course dont contain any quartz. All they are hugh fresh nepheline/microcline blocks from intermediate, fresh (not ceolitized) part of the vein #1 with fresh eudialyte. Apparently all they belong to the first Labuntsovs collections. I have one from them, and it is very similar to these three specimens.

I hope somebody who able will improwe TL of fersmanite.

Thank you!

Pavel

Mr. Lavinsky's photo captions are often big loads of scrap.

Dear friends high level users!

Can somebody to change type locality for fersmanite?

I'd create #1 of Labuntsov, 3rd left tributary of Vuonnemijok river, Eveslogchorr Mt., Central Khibina, Kola, Russia locality.

And also upload fersmanite photo from it http://www.mindat.org/photo-72661.html

Thank you!

Dear Uwe!

I had add some data to vein #2 page.

By the way, computer don't recognize locality "Vein #1 of Labuntsov, 3rd left tributary of Vuonnemijok river, Eveslogchorr Mt, Khibiny Massif, Kola peninsula, Murmanskaja oblast', Northern Region, Russia" dup to now.

So I am still unable to change caption under photo
