Improving Mindat.orgwrong varietal name

29th Nov 2006 07:51 UTCHarjo Neutkens Manager

Hi,

Today a Fluorite photo, www.mindat.org/foto-81333.html , was posted with to my knowledge a wrong varietal name.

It says as a variety: Stink-Fluss, wereas it should be Stinkspath.

Cheers

Harjo,

I agree with your correction - but it also goes to show the irelevance of using others than the most common varietal names in the description of pictures in Mindat - especially when the property necessary (crush and smell..) for using such a name cannot be evident from a photo.

In this part of the world we collect fluorite from the Richardson mine and give it the varietal name Antoazonite sp? because of the ozone like smell think Xerox machine which is actually free fluorine. These localities should have OSHA placarding

The smell is probabably caused by HF (reaction product of F2 and H2O -> Ozone and HF), although modern studies seem to be missing, see

http://www.berthold-weber.de/stinkspat.htm (sorry, in German)

Stop press.....

I just did some reading and found out that the term Stinkfluss was actually used in Germany in the old days allongside Stinkspath.

Then you should write Stinkfluss in stead of Stink-Fluss.

Sorry for the inconvenience.....

These crystals look a bit too pale to be stinkspat/stink-fluss/antozonite IMO.

Hi Uwe,

You're right about that, they look like "ordinary" purple Fluorite.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to limit the use of the variety Stinkspath, Antozonite or (as I found out.....) Stinkfluss to localities were dark to almost black Fluorite occurs in a radioactive environment (like the well known Wolsendorf Stinkspath).

Although....the term Stinkfluss still makes me think of the stuff runing through the sewage system......

Also, the odour a crystal gives off when crushed should in my opinion be treated with great care when being used as a parameter for determining a species or a variety, smell is very (!!) subjective.

As far as I know the Fluorites referred to as Stinkspath from, for example, Wolsendorf realy were smelling very bad.

Cheers
