is not a clorapatite, but a hydroxylapatite. Clorapatite is not found at this locality and should be removed from the list of minerals from the locality.

The ref. for chlorapatite from this locality is "Mineralogical Reccord vol 8(1977),s 78-82".

If clorapatite occurs at other Snarum localities, why not at this one? Is it only Cl-bearing OH-apatite?

The other localities are in serpentinites, and are pretty different from this locality. Can't be compared.

If the MinRec ref is to the serpentinite localities, it should also be deleted from this locality.

Mineralcollectors in Norway have labelled the apatite from Oksøiekollen as "hydroxylapatite" for many years, but so far i have not seen any published anlysis that can confirm its identity as such (so far as i see though). The only reference found is the above cited article in Mineralogical Record (vol 8 (1977),s 78-82). What this reference says is the following: In a list of analyzed apatites in the literature a white apatite from "Snarum, Norway" is listed as "chlorapatite". The reference is given as Weber (1851)- this being a reference found in Hintze (1933): Handbuch der Mineralogie 1, 4, 487-582, according to the author of the article. There is also a picture of an apatite from "Snarum, Norway". The apatite pictured is certainly from Oksøiekollen, showing typical habitus and matrix- no doubt. The text to the picture says: "Chlorapatite (white) from Snarum, Norway. (Smithsonian # R5226). I don't know if this very specimen has been analyzed.


Does anybody knows the Weber (1851) reference ?


Peter, there are (according to H.J.Bergs guide) other old apatite localities in Snarum (not serpentine-magnesite outcrops) like Lofthus, Enden or Otterbekk (localities not listed in Mindat) :-)

I checked Dana 5th edition (1868), p.531-532 under 'chlor-apatite' there is an analysis from "Weber (Pogg. lxxxiv, 306) for Snarum:


P 41.54

Fe 1.79

Ca 53.46

Cl 2.66


There are additional analyses from G.Rose on p.531 from Snarum and Arendal showing 4.28% and 0.801%'chloride of calcium' respectively.

Just a follow-up on this old tread:


Relatively recent EPMA analysis of these apatite crystals from Oksöiekollen confirmed these to be hydroxylapatites with a significant content of F.

An analysis done in the core of one sample however also showed a low content of OH and about equally dominating content of Cl and F.
