USA Traders??

Hey everyone,

So it doesn't seem like many Americans are trading much these days. Am I wrong? I don't have much to offer, on one hand, and on the other hand I'm pretty particular about what I want. But I'm just wondering if there is much trading going on; and not even between Americans, so much as trading pieces from localities in the US.

Specifically I'd be interested in trying to trade for AZ material. But since that seems unlikely, maybe someone can explain this phenomenon? The general lack of trading going on over here? Or am I incorrect?

Hard to guage the level of trading since most of it is done in private, and not posted for the public eye to see.

There is a Swap/Trade link on MinDat. I started a thread about looking to shrink the size of my collection. By that I mean trading small cabnet/cabnet size specimens for New England thumbnail size specimens. Post is still there, check it out.

Since the time I started the thread, I have done some trades, less than 5, but still, that's better than nothing.

Piece of advise: Be fair and more importantly, be realistic in valuing what you have to trade. Both sides like to think they are getting a good deal.

Hello Ben,
I am a trader in the US, but do not have much AZ material.
As David said, trades are happening, in fact I've traded twice with him, aqnd been very pleased.
I have also traded internationally quite a few times, most recently a parcel from Greece.
Good luck,
AK

Ben,

I do some trading but find that most people don't have the rarer silicates I seek. I have a list and have traded quite a few times this yr, both in and out of the country. write me if you want to see the list

Well so good, it does seem like there's at least somewhat of a trade scene happening. I guess it makes sense; there are so many minerals on the market, plus field-collecting, that trading isn't extremely prevalent. But I am glad to see that it's happening. Glenn, I'd write but, there's no way I have any rare silicates sad smiley And Matt, I appreciate the offer, but like I said I'm primarily after Arizona material. I have an obsession with this state for its geography, history (especially our rich mining history!) as well as the rare and classic minerals. So while I do very much like copper minerals, and imagine yours are nice, it just doesn't fit into my goals as a collector! Which again, relates to the reasons why trading isn't heavily popular around here.

Glenn, if you don't mind me asking, why do you collect silicates? Probably the same reason I collect copper-leads? David, I will check out your list, and I got a few PMs too that I'll try to follow up on, so that's encouraging. I agree about being realistic in the value for a trade, and I keep that in mind when talking about trading with someone.

Two examples: (that are on the table for everyone!) I have a rather pretty Tsumeb dioptase on a blanket of Duftite, a small cab, that I paid $150 for (which I think was really pretty reasonable.) But in trading that, by saying $150, the other party is likely to think: that's a lot of money, $150, and that's why I'm trading and not buying in the first place! So who knows - it's quite possible that a piece someone paid $60 for would be more than acceptable for me. So I would theoretically operate that way!

The other is a thumbnail of Diaboleite from Tiger that I bought, that has a price tag still on the label for $200 (I got it for $180.) But, since I'd rather keep the Diaboleite than the Dioptase, I probably would want a more expensive piece in trade - even though to a lot of people, the very pretty and larger Dioptase might be worth a lot more to them. But then again, if someone had a nice Tiger Fornacite or Boleite or Atacamite or such, regardless of its $ price, I may consider it an even trade, because I already have a much nicer Diaboleite.

So, yeah, I suppose it's all relative. And I have, considering the amount of minerals out there that people find desirable, a really very narrow window of material suitable for trades. But still, I like the idea of it, and hope to do some trading at some point. I wonder, if trading opens one up to material that would probably otherwise be unavailable? What I mean is, are there some pieces that collectors would never sell, but could conceivably be willing to trade? There's another great reason right there!

Thanks for the input everyone! Keep me in mind when you run across old Arizona stuff! smiling smiley

Hey Glenn,

Nice to hear you are still chasing those rare Silicates. We still find the occasion unusual silicate at Hampshire but it is getting more difficult.

I still love those pieces we swapped some years back.

I would love to trade but the issue I run into is of the value of the trade. I am afraid that what ever is sent to me, the person on the other end of the trade will think what I sent to them is not what they expected. I do not what to be labeled as a cheep skate. So I haven't sought-out trades, because who in the world want to trade for some sad Indiana Calcite's.

Byron,
I would be willing to trade for Indiana Calcite's
If you send me a wish list, I'll see what I can do.
Ben,
Would you be interested in minerals from Arizona that are not copper related.
For example four peaks amethyst? I have some other random things from AZ as well.

Hey Adam,

Yeah certainly, all AZ rocks are interesting to me. Four Peaks, specifically, isn't high on my list; I'm doing pretty well on AZ quartz right now, in fact I have a chlorite-included quartz coming tomorrow, which are quite rare from AZ! (Great price too: $1 in a package I already won from the seller so free ship!) But if you have other random stuff, there could very likely be something in there that I may want.

Of course, finding something that you want too, might be tough! My stuff that I want to get rid of is mostly pretty low end, honestly, and the better stuff I'd rather trade for more desirable stuff. So, don't rush to make up a list or anything. One of these days I'll get one together and send it to you.

I know I know here I am complaining about not enough people trading, and when it comes down to it I don't have much to offer - my bad. My collection is always improving though, so when I am ready to enter the trading scene, I'll be a major advocate for it!

Byron,

Since I'm a calcite collector I'm always interested in trading for GOOD calcite specimens.
Let me know what you have and what you are after.

Ben,
I do come across AZ material quite often, so if I see any deals, I'll keep you in mind.
I'm always a sucker for amethyst from unusual localities.
Kyanite, beryls, rhodochrosite, and anything colorchange works too.
