Mineralogical ClassificationPlumboan Aragonite vs Tarnowitzite

24th Oct 2014 12:06 UTCGrzegorz Słowik

Hello everyone,

I am wondering, what is the difference between Plumboan Aragonite http://www.mindat.org/min-3893.html and Tarnowitzite http://www.mindat.org/min-11089.html ? Both of them are Aragonite rich in lead. Can you explain me this? Thanks. ;)

Regards,

Grzesiek

I think you nailed the reason why varietal names are discouraged: there are no good definitions of them.

"Tarnowizite' has been identified as a mixture of Aragonite and Cerussite, but Plumboan Aragonite with up to 3%PbCO3 may be homogeneous.

Might I add to this "currently still discouraged", but soon enough, seeing as it already does exist out there, there will be no need to be quite so didactic about this.

We are fortunate to now live in a world which offers far better solutions than we've ever had before for data management and retrieval , and to do so wherever and whenever we like. Currently the information in mindat (and elsewhere) is set up in the same archaic model of information management and retrieval as Brtitanica always employed, the only real difference is that the pages are now electronic, not paper and you type instead of flip to find the appropriate individual "hard pages" of information.

Already there are smarter information management/retrieval models which could easily handle a great deal more varietal nomenclature than already exist, direct you to the appropriate "hard" information and still offer the subtleties and historical usage of varietal names . . . seamlessly. I hesitate to cull the herd when greener pastures are in sight, to encourage such old school thinking when we are so close to having it all. Frankly put, we no longer need to depend only on our own minds ability to keep them all straight.

As we consider the future of mindat, we ought also consider it's direction with the future of information in mind. Use your tools wisely.

What kind of models are you talking about, Mark? Sounds interesting!

Rather than a mixture Tarnowitzite is an oriented exsolution of Cerussite in Aragonite. Thus it is different than a simple variety of lead-bearing Aragonite. There are few modern analyses of Tarnowitzite so the boundary of homogeneity is only approximate.

The samples from Tsumeb are Pb-aragonite or Tarnowitzite???

24th Oct 2014 17:40 UTCRichard Gunter Expert

The Ca-Pb Aragonite Group phase at Tsumeb has been described as Tarnowitzite in all of the literature. The Tsumeb Special Issue of the Mineralogical Record has a good description of the carbonates from the mine.

Perfect.

Then all the samples present in Mindat from Tsumeb with the name Plumboan Aragonite Photo ID: 53675, Photo ID: 69021, Photo ID: 18558, Photo ID: 18559, Photo ID: 131781, Photo ID: 50375, Photo ID: 74199, Photo ID: 80699, Photo ID: 106118, Photo ID: 133545, Photo ID: 119369, etc.... must change name in Tarnowitzite so for not to lead to error, I think, and must cancel the name Aragonite var. Plumboan Aragonite from list of minerals of locality with eventual note.
