Here will go a good picture of a fluorite from Canada and general remarks about the fluorite from this country. Here are some url's to some of the better Canadian fluorite specimens here on Mindat that can be considered for inclusion in the article. These, in most cases are just for temporary use until we can get images of the much better specimens that are almost certainly out there. We should also consider that there are probably localities out there with fine specimens that are not even mentioned on Mindat. Also in some instances there are sometimes pictures on Mindat, of specimens from a locality, but they were so ratty that I did not include them here, but there may also be really good specimens from there that we should talk about in this article.

New Brunswick produced some superb fluorite samples (including very large xls), one example is photographed in the RMS displays: (specimen on left) photo by Gail Spann.

Other fluorite localities include Niobec mine (nice green xls to approx over 2 cm), highway 5 road cut in Hull tp.(from the 1970s or 80s, written up in minrec for the unusual xl forms. Produced octahedrons to 4cm among other fluorite xl habits)

Hi Philippe and Rock,

The specimen in the Melansons'exhibit at Rochester is from Newfoundland. Their label said "St. Lawrence Fluorspar, Buren Peninsula, Newfoundland". That locality is new to me but looks worthy of inclusion! You are correct about New Brunswick likewise producing some excellent fluorites. They were blue and perhaps other colors, and they were found at the Mount Pleasant Mine, situated midway between Fredericton and St. George. This locality is listed in Mindat, with a humongous species list but no photos yet.

I've got a couple of fluorite specimens from there, but they are not worthy of the gallery. I recall the pocket was collected by a prominent Canadian dealer whose name escapes me (Rod Tyson? - I haven't had that first cup of coffee this morning!). I think the national museum in Ottawa was likewise involved and probably has good specimens from the discovery.

Philippe, those zoned Marmora fluorites are stunning, especially the 10-cm plate!! (:P)

George Thompson (True North Minerals) had a few zoned fluorites at Rochester the last couple of years, and they look identical to your specimens. They were labeled as coming from "Highway # 7 Roadcut near Deloro, Ontario". Could that be the same locality? If so, it looks like you hit the jackpot!

Yes, it is the h7 roadcut between Marmora and Madoc (closer to Marmora). I will have to look on my maps and see which is the exact township. Unfortunately I didn't collect them, but still glad I was able to buy some as nice as these! I will add the h7 locality to mindat.

I've refrained from adding the locality to 'Deloro' since it seems a little bit far from the town to be included in the division. Turns out that Deloro is several km WNW of the location and closer to it than Marmora. Perhaps the specimen posted by John Betts should be moved to this locality as well. Looks like the typical, unique fluorite habit that was found there (although some different habits also occur at the h7 cut, these are most unique and incomparable to specimens from other Madoc localities).

There are lots of good Canadian fluorites and localities too that have probably not made their way to the Mindat locality lists or image galleries. Hopefully someone, perhaps one of you will step up and write the article? People will step forward to offer advice, information and images. That is the way it has worked on all the other articles that have been written and are in progress.
