Named in 1975 in honor of John Cowles (1907-1985) of Rainier, Oregon, amateur mineralogist and enthusiastic zeolite collector, whose deep interest in zeolite mineralogy led him to discover new localities for ferrierite, dachiardite, erionite and the co-type locality for cavansite.
Zeolite Group.

Unlike other zeolites, cowlesite has a very limited compositional range (Vezzalini et al., 1992).
