Named in 1842 by Carl Christian Hochstetter allusion to its high water content ('Hydro-') and to its resemblance to talc.
Dimorph of:
Is a member of the hydrotalcite group and hydrotalcite supergroup.

May be confused with meixnerite. Compare also quintinite. Hydrotalcite-2H, formerly manasseite, was discredited as a polytype of hydrotalcite by Mills et al. (2012).
