Named in 1953 by Alice Mary Dowse Weeks, Mary E. Thompson, and Raymond B. Thompson for prefix meta- indicating a dehydration relationship to tyuyamunite.
Isostructural with:
Visually indistinguishable from tyuyamunite or similar uranyl vanadates. May spontaneously dehydrate in dry atmosphere from tyuyamunite.
