Name:It was first found in 1904 at the Kataranskii Cape, hence the name, Kataranskite.
A Mixture Of:Albite-Anorthite Series, Phengite

A decorative violet pseudomorph of a plagioclase. It is a very coarse-granular, pegmatitic vein rock consisting mainly of hypersthene and labradorite feldspar.

Originally described from Kolvitsa massif, Kataranskii Cape, Kola Peninsula, Murmanskaja Oblast', Northern Region, Russia.

The absorption spectra of violet specimens of kataranskite are related to the presence of Mn3+-bearing muscovite enriched in iron and magnesium. The colour of micaceous pseudomorphs after plagioclase in kataranskite is due to microinclusions of Mn- bearing phengite in the albite-oligoclase matrix. Replacement of plagioclase by the phengite is related to the metasomatic alteration of kataranskite in tectonic crush zones during Palaeozoic activization of gabbros.
